Prayer Request

Posted April 5, 2018 By John C Wright

A reader named Paul whose mother in grave danger from illness has asked me to pray for her. I do not wish to share the sad details, but Christ, who suffers with the sufferers, knows them well. Please join us in prayer.

O great St. Peregrine, you have been called “The Mighty,” “The Wonder-Worker,” because of the numerous miracles which you have obtained from God for those who have had recourse to you.
For so many years you bore in your own flesh this cancerous disease that destroys the very fibre of our being, and who had recourse to the source of all grace when the power of man could do no more. You were favoured with the vision of Jesus coming down from His Cross to heal your affliction. Ask of God and Our Lady, the cure of the sick whom we entrust to you.

Bring our prayers and petitions for Paul’s mother before the great judgment seat in heaven, and ask mercy from the all-merciful.

Aided in this way by your powerful intercession, we shall sing to God, now and for all eternity, a song of gratitude for His great goodness and mercy.
Amen.

Prayer Request

Posted March 21, 2018 By John C Wright

JC Cowan writes:

My aunt is currently undergoing heavy cancer treatment. I would very much appreciate your prayers and anyone else reading this.

God bless.

Please add your prayers to JC Cowan’s, for there is more strength found there than men imagine.

Here is a prayer to St. Peregrine of the Friar Order Servants of Mary, who is one of the patron saints charged with carrying the prayers for salvation from such illnesses to the altars of heaven, and joining his prayers to ours:

Glorious wonder-worker, St. Peregrine, you answered the divine call with a ready spirit, and forsook all the comforts of a life of ease and all the empty honors of the world to dedicate yourself to God in the Order of His holy Mother.

You labored manfully for the salvation of souls. In union with Jesus crucified, you endured painful sufferings with such patience as to deserve to be healed miraculously of an incurable cancer in your leg by a touch of His divine hand.

Obtain for us the grace to answer every call of God and to fulfill His will in all the events of life. Enkindle in our hearts a consuming zeal for the salvation of all men.

Deliver her from the infirmities that afflict the body JC Cowan’s aunt, who is beloved of you.

Obtain for her also a perfect resignation to the sufferings it may please God to send me, so that, imitating our crucified Savior and His sorrowful Mother, she may merit eternal glory in heaven.

St. Peregrine, pray for us and for all who invoke your aid.

Prayer Request

Posted February 23, 2018 By John C Wright

A reader writes in with a heartfelt plea:

I am asking for a prayer request for my cousin’s son.
A few days ago, her one year old son had a seizure. It came out of nowhere. She and her husband are still at the hospital. He has only just begun to recover enough to be allowed eat and his facial paralysis is receding.
They still don’t know the cause and are waiting for test results.
His name is the Greek Alexandros. Or Alex.

O Good St. Anne you who cured the sick and laid a healing hand upon the lame, the blind, and the crippled, look with compassion upon Alex in his trouble.

O Good St. Anne, compassionate mother, pray for your weary child.

Pray for Light in the Darkness

Posted August 15, 2016 By John C Wright

For those of you suffering from the two-dimensional worldview called secularism, which ignores all spiritual reality, or you Christians suffering from complacency, where you perhaps think our current spiritual reality is in good order, here is a reminder that we human live on a battlefield where godlike powers, principalities, dominions, archangels and angels wrestle over the immortal souls of unwitting mankind:

http://okgazette.com/2016/06/29/black-mass-and-the-consumption-of-mary-set-for-aug-15/

In a Satanic ritual planned for public view in August at Civic Center Music Hall, sulfur, menstrual blood and the ashes of blasphemed and burned Quran pages will be used to “corrupt” a plaster statue of the Virgin Mary.

The ceremony, known as The Consumption of Mary, is part of a ticketed black Mass hosted by Oklahoma City’s satanic Church of Ahriman Aug. 15 at Civic Center Music Hall, 201 N. Walker Ave. A black Mass is a dark parody, or inversion, of a traditional Roman Catholic Church religious service.

Church of Ahriman religious leader Dastur Adam Daniels has drawn local and national enmity for his organization’s public ceremonies and demonstrations. Archbishop Paul Coakley of the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City issued a media statement calling the group’s 2014 black Mass “a satanic inversion and distortion of the most sacred beliefs not only of Catholics, but of all Christians.”

The article continues:

The federal government recognizes The Church of Ahriman as a legitimate religious organization, Daniels said. Therefore, while considered offensive by many Christians and others, its practices are protected by the U.S. Constitution’s First Amendment, which guarantees the right to the free exercise of religion.

“We’re not doing anything against the law,” Daniels said. “Against canon law, sure. But the United States’ law? No. We’re not doing anything wrong.”

Daniels said his church’s practices draw from the occult, Zoroastrianism and elements of Eastern theologies such as Tantrism and Hinduism. Daniels said some satanic magic and rituals traditionally call for animal sacrifices and eating human flesh, but his church finds alternatives. For example, his congregation uses human menstrual fluid instead of animal blood.

“I just want people to understand that there is no danger in coming to our show,” Daniels said. “It’s public, there are going to be police officers there, it is fully protected. Everyone is going to be safe, and it is an opportunity to learn.”

My comment: Opportunity to learn, eh? Oh, well, then, in that case, burn a Koran while you are at it.

I know that some Protestants have some sort of enmity toward the Virgin, but I have never been able to discover any historical or theological explanation that makes sense. I assume even a sternly anti-Papist Reformer would still not want to side with the Satanists, and not want the mother of our Savior to be insulted and demeaned in this fashion.

It is in that hope I ask any non-Catholic reading these words to take some time to pray for the failure of the intentions of the Satanists, and for their curses to redound back upon them tenfold.

My fellow Catholics may be aware that August 15th is not a holy day of Obligation, since it falls on a Monday this year, but in light of these dark circumstances, I hope you will consider going to mass this day.

Prayer Request and Charity Donation

Posted August 10, 2016 By John C Wright

David Marcoe, a longtime friend and ally, asked me to post a request for your prayers and donations. He writes:

My father lives in the Philippines with his wife. For some time his cancer had been lingering, but to all appearances was manageable. Now, it’s gotten more aggressive, such that he needs an operation as soon as possible. He and his wife didn’t know how they are going to pay for it. I’m reaching out to those that I can to raise the money, and every little bit helps.

Here is a prayer that I think is apt to this petition:

Glorious wonder-worker, St. Peregrine, you answered the divine call with a ready spirit, and forsook all the comforts of a life of ease and all the empty honors of the world to dedicate yourself to God in the Order of His holy Mother.
You labored manfully for the salvation of souls. In union with Jesus crucified, you endured painful sufferings with such patience as to deserve to be healed miraculously of an incurable cancer in your leg by a touch of His divine hand.
Obtain for me the grace to answer every call of God and to fulfill His will in all the events of life. Enkindle in my heart a consuming zeal for the salvation of all men.
Deliver the faithful child of God, Mr. Marcoe, from the infirmities that afflict his body.

St. Peregrine, pray for me and for all who invoke your aid.

Prayer Request

Posted July 10, 2016 By John C Wright

A reader asks for your prayers. He writes “The mother of an acquaintance of mine has gone into cardiac arrest. Vitals are strong, but other than opening her eyes once or twice, she is unresponsive.”

Saint John of God, I honor thee as the Patron of the Sick, especially of those who are afflicted by heart disease. I choose thee to be my patron and protector in my present illness. To thee I entrust my soul, my body, all my spiritual and temporal interests, as well as those of the sick throughout the world. To thee I consecrate my mind, that in all things it may be enlightened by faith above all in accepting my cross as a blessing from God; my heart, that thou doth keep it pure and fill it with the love for Jesus and Mary that burned in thy heart; my will, that like thine, it may always be one with the Will of God.

Prayers Needed

Posted January 20, 2016 By John C Wright

My friend, partner, editor, and the man who discovered me and launched my career, Mr. David Hartwell of Tor Books, needs your prayers. His wife, Kathryn Kramer, write this note on Facebook:

Late this afternoon David [Hartwell] had a massive brain bleed from which he is not expected to recover.

He is a kindhearted, friendly and thoroughly professional man, and one of the top names in the field. He is also very dear to me, so this is a grievous blow.

Saint John, pray for us.

Rest in Peace: Isaac Wilcott (1980-2015)

Posted December 30, 2015 By John C Wright

Isaac William Wilcott

Born September 22, 1980

Died September 9, 2015

It is with great regret and a heavy heart I must report that Mr. Isaac Wilcott, has passed away this year.

I owe him a great debt which will not be repayed in this life. I visited his A.E. van Vogt homage website when I was laboring in furious joy on the authorized sequel to A.E. van Vogt’s seminal work, WORLD OF NULL A. I had, until then, only seen and read the novelized version, which differed in important respects from the original serialized magazine version. Mr. Wilcott gave me access not only to the original, but to his comparative notes. He also then volunteered to read the manuscript, and made other valuable suggestions, and even went so far as to interview me and help publicize the work.

It would have been difficult without his help. The project may have failed altogether. I am glad I dedicated the book to him: it is a small monument, but I have no more to offer.

All he did for me was out of the generosity of his heart. He was a pleasure to speak to, and he was that rarity in these rude and rough times, a man who was a perfect gentleman, who knew the art of how to put others at ease and make them welcome.

His website bout A.E. van Vogt is a tireless collection of significant information and a labor of love. Anyone interested in the history of the Campbellian ‘Golden Age’ of Science Fiction could do worse than to look and see: http://www.icshi.net/.

He was born in AD 1980, making him some twenty years my junior. Had I known he was to be taken from us so suddenly, I would have taken more steps to get to know him better. I thought I would have more time.

What I did not know was that he was afflicted with seizures, a neurological disorder that prevented him from getting his master’s degree in history. The afflictions grew throughout his life, and he also developed painful arthritis, and suffered bouts of despair. Let us hope and pray that he is now embraced in the joy this life on earth did not show him, and more.

He is buried at the Ochiltree County cemetery near Perryton, Texas, where his grandfather and great-grandfather are buried.

***

Isaac was born on September 22, 1980 to Curtis and Sandra Wilcott of Ridgecrest, CA in Fort Collins, Colorado. He was a member of China Lake Baptist Church in Ridgecrest, California.

Isaac is survived by his parents, Sandra and Curtis, two brothers, Daniel, of Ridgecrest, CA, and Elijah and wife Angel, of Greenville, SC; a sister, Esther Parker and husband, Andrew, of Portland, Oregon; and his grandmother, Winona Molesworth of Amarillo, Texas.

The family requests that memorials be made to China Lake Baptist Church, P. O. Box 23, Ridgecrest, CA 93556.

Sci Phi Mag needs Us! (Shanghaied by Jagi)

Posted October 12, 2015 By John C Wright

Hey folks,

Jagi, here.  I learned this morning that Sci Phi Journal needs help.

For those who don’t know it, Sci Phi Journal offers science fiction stories that have a philosophy to them. It is one of the few periodicals offering a place to the kind of stories that Sad Puppies stood for…in fact, it was on the Hugo ballot this year, as was one of the stories that appeared in it (“On A Spiritual Plain” by Lou Antonelli).

Sci Phi offers a venue for the very kinds of stories that we all want to read but seldom get to see. It features some of the best new authors, like Josh Young and Brian Niemeyer, and a number of others. Both John and I have had stories appear in its pages.

It would be a real shame if it folded!

What can you all do to help?

If you should feel moved to make a donation, you can do so here. (The donate button is on the right. You may need to page down.)

Or, if you would like to help a good cause AND get some high quality fiction, you can buy the issue with John’s story:

http://www.amazon.com/Sci-Phi-Journal-November-Philosophy-ebook/dp/B00OWS1H26

My story, “HMS Mangled Treasure: The Rescue of Mr. Spaghetti”, takes place in the background of my Prospero series. It features Prospero Inc. foremost detective, Mab, facing car-stealing fairy pirates in Chicago.

You can get it here.

Other issues available here.

Also, prayers for Jason Rennie, the editor and publisher of Sci Phi Journal, would be really wonderful!

Thanks, folks!

Prayer Request

Posted September 22, 2015 By John C Wright

From a reader:

I am writing you to request prayers for my sister in law’s nephew’s daughter, a little girl, who is suffering from neuroblastoma. She was diagnosed at the age of 2, given a few months, and is now 8. She spent 10 hours in the OR today to have masses removed from her spine. If you and the excellent Mrs. Wright would add her to your list, it would no doubt have great and lasting benefit. St. Peregrine, pray for us.

St. Peregrine is the patron saint aiding those afflicted with cancer.

An Unknown Friend needs your Prayers

Posted September 16, 2015 By John C Wright

A man I met once turned to me for help, and asked me to pray for him. It seems he and his wife have fallen into the ongoing hell of an unhappy marriage, and every conversation ends in a shouting match.

There is nothing I can do for him, no advice I can give, no way to help, except one. He asked for my prayers, and I would like to ask you, dear readers, for yours. I don’t want to repeat his name on the internet, but God and His saints will know who you mean if you volunteer to help.

(I note in passing that back when I was an atheist, neither did my fellow atheists and I ask for help from strangers when we suffered, nor did we volunteer to help, nor was their any help to give. Atheism is a cold universe, and there is only cold comfort there. Even if God should turn out to be a dream and a delusion, sharing even an imaginary warmth is an act of love and goodfellowship is better than the real coldheartedness godlessness produces.)

Here is a disciple of Christ who also had an unhappy marriage, and who is one of the Patron Saints of impossible causes: Read the remainder of this entry »
