Termagants, Nags, and Scolds

Posted July 30, 2018 By John C Wright

Here is yet another Walkaway story:

Illiberal Values

https://harpers.org/archive/2018/08/illiberal-values/
A quote:

I see evidence that certain liberal principles, the ones that impressed me in the Seventies, have eroded. Back then, for example, the CIA was understood to be a nest of liars and psychopaths who toppled democratically chosen leaders, lied to the public to start wars, and ran sick experiments on innocents using drugs and mind-control techniques. In Three Days of the Condor, a thriller from the period, Robert Redford plays a lowly CIA officer who discovers that the agency is nothing more than a crime ring. These days, however, with Trump playing the heavy, the CIA is revered by many liberals as a bulwark of integrity, its missions sacred, its conclusions unimpeachable, and its former director, John Brennan, worthy of a high-profile cable news job. The FBI draws similar adulation, never mind its history of spying on the likes of Ernest Hemingway, John Lennon, and Martin Luther King Jr.

This great liberal switch from skepticism to sanctimony about the most powerful arms of the Establishment is matched by a viral fear of Russia that reminds me of the John Birch Society pamphlets I’d come across now and then when I was young. Somehow, instinct told me then that they were crazy, exaggerating the cunning of the enemy, the depravity of the collaborators, and the vulnerability of America. The liberal comedians who lampooned such claims on shows such as Laugh-In were my idols. They dared to speak the most radical truth of all in a time of panic and paranoia…

My comment: In some ways, the Right and Left in America have swapped temperment. The Rightwing is now the haven the relaxed, easy-going, hippy-dippy freethinkers, whereas the Leftwing is the puritanical, condemnatory, judgmental, rigid termagants, nags, and scolds.

Razorfist on Solomon Kane

Posted July 26, 2018 By John C Wright

Language warning, as always, when dealing with the Poet Laureate of Profanity.

The Sultan of Salty Language discusses, in his inimitable style, the dour face Puritan avenger of evil, Solomon Kane. Tastes differ, but I have always had more affection for the grim fanatic avenger than for Robert Howard’s more famed heroes.

Patience, kind Sirs and fair Mademoiselles!

Posted July 25, 2018 By John C Wright

I am frantically writing today’s episode of LOST ON THE LAST CONTINENT with a big, stupid grin on my face, but I have an out of town guest, a major purchase to go buy (thanks to the generosity of friends and patrons, and the grace of God, I may be able to afford), and a podcast to make later this evening.

Darnit! I am right in the middle of Preston getting his clock cleaned by a fierce river monster, too! He is being attacked while bathing, so he only has one of his four or five weapons with him! And soap in his eyes! Now I have to go drive somewhere!

Still: it is on the way. Promise. Before midnight, or after. Don’t know how long this evenings chores will take.

Freestartr Paused

Posted July 22, 2018 By John C Wright

Folks, Jagi, here.

Just wanted to let the Freestartr folks know that Stripe dropped Freestartr, so they are unable to collect money and pass it onto us.

They are working to solve this problem, but…it looks as if it will not happen this month.

You are all welcome to just wait. We are waiting patiently and saying a prayer for them. But…if any one feels moved to send what would have been their Freestartr donation through Paypal just for July, it would be received with much gratitude.

Thanks!

Jagi

No Red Pill Tonight

Posted July 18, 2018 By John C Wright

Our regularly scheduled program of Escaping Atheism with Max Kolbe has been cancelled, but as part of the general effort to redpill the unwary out of the Matrix of lies and deception which the modern man proudly wears like the mind control caps from John Christopher’s Tripods trilogy, please inspect the following curt but trenchant summary of the current political situation in America: Read the remainder of this entry »

Not Tired of Winning Yet XLVII

Posted July 13, 2018 By John C Wright

I have heard Democrat talking heads solemnly repeating the talking point that Donald Trump, by trying to get NATO to strengthen its military spending, and trying to get Germany to stop giving money to Russia, is acting as a Russian agent, because maneuvering to impoverish Russia and cordon it about with a strong military is obviously in Russia’s best interest.

The phrase used was that Donald Trump is destroying the international architecture of the postwar world, or something to that effect. Meanwhile, when I listen to what world leaders actually say, the exact opposite is happening. Teresa May, speaking on behalf of Her Majesty’s government of the United Kingdom, just announced her support for Trump’s meetings with Russia, with North Korea, and said the UK and the US were pursuing a wide-ranging free trade agreement.

Meanwhile, with their typical calm and even-toned understatement, the Dems have announced that the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh means the end of the Republic, if not the end of all life on earth, as well as the destruction of ten thousand advanced civilizations throughout the Orion Arm of the galaxy.

Some of my conservative friends have expressed mild disappointment with this pick, since they would have preferred Ted Cruz or Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI instead, someone who might have more clearly been ready and willing to overturn Roe v Wade. Both good choices, but I am willing to speculate on the logic behind Trump’s pick.

Now, my belief is not that Donald Trump is a genius who plays four-dimensional chess, nor a blundering fool whom kindly fate has merely by accident delivered to him one victory after another. I believe he is a businessman who thinks in the straightforward way of a businessman, and therefore the point of his moves is and will always remain invisible and incomprehensible to pundits and politicians who think in the elliptical way their professions require.

Roger Zelazny Recommendations

Posted July 11, 2018 By John C Wright

I have notice more than one fan of mine (I have at least two, counting myself, and my mom) lauding elements in my stories which I shamelessly steal from better authors. As a public service, I would like to mention those authors, and lead you to the original of which I am but a shadow:

I suggest that if you like the family infighting, larger-than-life superhumans, and intrigue, you read yourself some Roger Zelazny’s deservedly famed Amber series. It is a delight: a film noir detective tale (starring my personal favorite character, an amnesiac), which morphs into a fantasy and a Jacobin-style revenge drama.

The Merlin books take place in the same background, but they are terrible. Avoid.

Of his work, I recommend LORD OF LIGHT as his best.
