Gun Grabbers Grab During Pestilence

Posted April 15, 2020 By John C Wright

A message from the Virginian Constitutional Conservatives, which I share to any readers in Virginia, who wishes our lovely commonwealth not to suffer the fate of California:

******

While you are sheltering in place, the radical gun grabbers in Richmond are scheming to gut more of the 2nd Amendment.

On April 22, 2020, the State Legislature will be back in session and your gun rights are in their sights.

In fact, Governor ‘Radical Ralph’ Northam has renewed his call for banning common, semi-automatic firearms and standard capacity magazines.

Remember, House Bill 961, the so called ‘assault weapons’ ban was only tabled and could be brought back up for a vote anytime!  This would make millions of gun owners instantly criminals if it passes.

And we need your help.

We need you to call Senator John Edwards (D-21) and tell him he must NOT allow a vote on House Bill 961!

For while the COVID -19 virus has been keeping most Americans distracted, radical politicians, such as Edwards, have been passing draconian anti-gun and anti-constitutional legislation all across the Republic.

This is why it is vitally important that you call Senator John Edwards at  (540) 985-8690 and tell him he must NOT allow House Bill 961 up for a vote in the April Session….or ever!

Hat tip to New Number Two:

Trump Halts Funding to WHO Pending Review of Agency’s Handling of Coronavirus Pandemic

President Trump on Tuesday announced he would halt U.S. funding to the World Health Organization pending a review of its handling of the coronavirus pandemic.

“Today I’m instructing my administration to halt funding of the WHO while a review is conducted to assess the WHO’s role in severely mismanaging and covering up the spread of the coronavirus,” Trump said at a White House press briefing. “The WHO failed in this basic duty and must be held accountable.”

It was not immediately clear if the order will cover all or part of U.S. government funding of the organization. The U.S. contributes over $400 million to the WHO every year, or 15 percent of the agency’s annual budget. (China funds 0.2 percent of the WHO’s budget.)

“The silence of the WHO on the disappearance of scientific researchers and doctors, and new restrictions on the sharing of research into the origins of COVID-19 in the country of origin is deeply concerning. Especially when we put up by far the largest amount of money,” Trump said. Over the weekend China mandated that research papers on the origin of the coronavirus must be approved by the state before publication.

Trump further assailed the agency’s criticism of travel restrictions the president imposed in January on travelers who had passed through China.

“The WHO’s attack on travel restrictions put political correctness above life-saving measures,” Trump said.

The president has previously indicated he would consider cutting U.S. funding to the WHO entirely. The agency has also come under fire from U.S. lawmakers for allegedly whitewashing Chinese government mismanagement of the coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan, which has since spread into a pandemic.

Taiwan in March accused the WHO of failing to publish early warnings from Taiwanese medical officials that the coronavirus could be spread via human-to-human transmission. China, which does not recognize Taiwan as an independent country, does not permit the WHO to accept Taiwan as a member state

The Shape of Lostness

Posted April 14, 2020 By John C Wright

I received this in a letter from a Mr. Coney, which was so striking to me, I asked his permission to share it here with my dear readers:

Regarding the Left, the last time I was in the US was 2015-17 and while I was there I was shocked at how extreme, aggressive and insane liberalism has become, how detached from reality.  I found my mind occupied with leftist ideology, having imaginary conversations in my head, getting angry, and so forth.  When I was in prayer about it the Lord spoke a single sentence into my mind:  “It’s just the shape that lostness is taking in this generation.”

He goes on to say:

The left today is no more separate from Christ than were respectable people in the 1950’s, though these latter probably had happier lives overall because they operated out of a much greater knowledge of reality than do members of the Left today.  In fact, the amount of pain that comes to proponents of Progressivism today from living blindfolded may drive mass numbers of them to repent.  That is my prayer.  God turns our trash into something good.

The Inspector General’s report finds that the Russian government colluded in 2016 with the Clinton campaign, not with the Trump campaign.

The vindication of the Trump Administration has begun.

Let us pray that the evildoers behind this, no matter what positions of power in the previous administration they held, or who her husband was, or what his skin hue is,  suffer the penalties allowed by the full rigor of the law for this abuse of power.

A story in the World Tribune: gives the details:

Newly declassified footnotes from the Department of Justice inspector general’s report on FBI FISA abuses officially confirm that the Christopher Steele dossier was based in part on Russian disinformation, two Republican senators revealed.

In 2016, ‘there were ties between Russian intelligence and a presidential campaign — the Clinton campaign, not Trump’s.’

Republican Sens. Charles Grassley of Iowa and Ron Johnson of Wisconsin said the footnotes in DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz’s report show the Democratic Party and the Clinton campaign were actively responsible for spreading Russian disinformation contained in Steele’s bogus dossier. The FBI used the dossier as key evidence to justify spying on the 2016 Trump campaign.

“These footnotes confirm that there was a direct Russian disinformation campaign in 2016, and there were ties between Russian intelligence and a presidential campaign — the Clinton campaign, not Trump’s,” The Washington Times cited Grassley and Johnson as saying.

Johnson and Grassley said the FBI knew it had contradictory and exculpatory evidence, but engaged in “blind pursuit” of President Donald Trump.

An Easter Reading from the Golden Legend

Posted April 12, 2020 By John C Wright

From Volume One of The Golden Legend (Aurea Legenda) of the blessed Jacobus de Varagine 1275.  Englished by William Caxton 1483.

Here Beginneth the Resurrection

Of how Jesu Christ drew the holy fathers out of hell, and what he made there, the Evangelist telleth not clearly.

Nevertheless Saint Austin in a sermon, and Nicodemus in his gospels, show it somewhat.

OPERATION VAMPIRE RETURNS

Posted April 10, 2020 By John C Wright

For those of you who disliked the previous cover, you can now by Operation Vampire by Steven G. Johnson, a book edited and recommended by my lovely and talented wife, with a new, much-improved cover–thanks to the same guys who brought you my Pangaea novels.

Mick Murphy’s an Irish half-elf from Manhattan. His best buddy, Dave, is a dwarf from Brooklyn. Along with a company of misfits, screwballs and, well, trolls from the pit, they’ll take on anything Austro-Hungaro-Roumania, or even Hell, cares to throw at them.

Assigned to King Company—the reconnaissance company—of the 134th Infantry Regiment in November of 1944, they’re the regimental reserve, the Colonel’s bodyguard, the military police, and general rock-straighteners. But once in a while, when the gremlins stop hexing their Jeeps, they go out and poke around to find out where the Enemy is and what he’s up to.

They’re very good at finding and dealing with all the vampires, werewolves, and sky demons the Enemy can throw at them. Unfortunately, though, behind them are the Big Boys, deep down in a pit of their own, and the War won’t end until G.I.s plant their boots on the Devil’s throne and kick him out.

Working their way up to this biggest of D-Days—the assault on Hell, itself—is going to tax the United States Army to its utmost…but the dogfaces on the Line are one step ahead of the brass, because they’re already halfway to Hell.

Get Operation Vampire today. You will not be disappointed.

What is Beauty?

Posted April 8, 2020 By John C Wright

How to define beauty?

The Thomistic definition of beauty is as follows: beauty is that which gives pleasure when seen (ST I-II, 27. 1). “Seen” in this passages means seeing something that is truly there, that is, not merely in the eye of the beholder.

Jacques Maritain explains: “Beauty is essentially the object of intelligence, for what knows in the full meaning of the word is the mind, which alone is open to the infinity of being. The natural site of beauty is the intelligible world: thence it descends. But it falls in a way within the grasp of the senses, since the senses in the case of man serve the mind and can themselves rejoice in knowing.” (Maritain, 23).

For Thomas, beauty has four primary standards: actuality, integrity, proportion, radiance (ST, I.39.8c).

Note that this list is centered on the relationship of the three persons of the trinity, specifically in reference to the Son.

The Son has integrity insofar as he “has in Himself truly and perfectly the nature of the Father.”

The Son has proportion “inasmuch as He is the express Image of the Father.”

Lastly, the third property radiance (which also means brightness, or clarity) is found in the Son, as the Word, “which is the light and splendor of the intellect.”

The Envy of the Devil

Posted April 7, 2020 By John C Wright

The Book of the Wisdom of Solomon was a part of the Bible since before Christ, and was officially declared canon for all the world in the years before the Fall of Rome.

The Protestants, for reasons best known to them, decided to redact these words of inspired scripture.

Thus, the English speaking world has had so little exposure to them, that they have played little or no part in our literature and poetry and traditions. That loss is one greatly to be regretted.

However, since two of the discussions in this space have touched upon themes addressed by the wisest of mortal men, I thought it best to inquire of King Solomon.

This is the King James translation, Chapter II:

1

For the ungodly said, reasoning with themselves, but not aright, “Our life is short and tedious, and in the death of a man there is no remedy: neither was there any man known to have returned from the grave.

Another Question for Mr. Gudeman

Posted April 7, 2020 By John C Wright

A follow up to a previous conversation. I direct the question to Mr. Gudeman, but anyone with a considered opinion is welcome to answer.

Sir, please explain to me once more why you regard pain as subjective.

By your definition, objective is what exists in all minds of all observers regardless of who they are or where they stand.

But pain not only fits this definition, it is the only thing that fits this definition. All babies cry when drawing the first breath of life.

If pain is not what exists in the minds of all, nothing is.

Question for Red Rover

Posted April 6, 2020 By John C Wright

Red Rover left the following comment in my comments section:

“…justice is simply “I don’t like it” applied by a person or group of persons with adequate power to punish those who step out of line…”

This leads to an interesting question:

Sir, what is your opinion of chivalry?

That is, what is your opinion of the moral imperative to treat even avowed enemies with courtesy and dignity on the grounds each human foe, being human, merits it, regardless of one’s personal preferences or disposition toward him, or enmity or grievance?

In particular, should I be polite to you and allow you to make false, nonsensical and evil statements here on my platform, when I have the power to ban you without explanation and without any fear of retaliation?

Or should I extend courtesy to you and allow you the time and space to speak your piece?

Please think carefully before responding, and please respond promptly, since, if I hear no answer, I may ban you merely as the type of exercise in arbitrary power which you seem here to be advocating.

ADDED LATER:

Well, well, Mr. Rover aka Steelman aka JackRippa reacted as predicted.

“There is no objective chivalry any more than there is any objective justice.”

Wrong answer. Banned.

Am I a fool? Am I going to treat you fairly if you say there is no such thing as fairness? Am I going to be just to you if you say justice is merely the will of the stronger? Am I to be chivalrous if you spit on chivalry?

You have been banned under different names here twice before. You should know by now that your own philosophy condemns you.

Instead, I will do you the honor of assuming you want to be treated according to the standard you announce.
