More Princess Aura

Posted May 14, 2020 By John C Wright

This repro quality is not the best, but I found on the YouTube this clip of the Filmation version of Princess Aura. The voice actress is Melendy Britt.

There are not many voice actresses who could purr, “Be my slave, Earthman; I swear you will not long wear your chains,” and make it sound convincing, if not fascinating.

The scene cuts off just before she ray-blasts Thun the Prince of the Lion-Men with her laser-ring.

Important moral lesson here: never make passes at hunky, handsome, shirtless Earthman to lure him into your web of sin while a mouthy Lion-man is lounging within earshot. He will spoil the romantic mood.

Some illustrations in honor of a certain wicked space princess who shall go unnamed.

My Jesuit lawyer, Father de Casuistry, commands me to add a disclaimer: All characters, but especially Princess Aspasia of Io, appearing in my work, THE SPACE DESPOT’S BEAUTIFUL DAUGHTER  are fictitious. Any resemblance to real space princesses, living or dead, or drawn by Alexander O. Raymond, is purely coincidental. No identification with actual persons, places, or planets is intended or should be inferred.

But if such identification is not made, then all my hard work aping Princess Aura with such slavish and skintight particularity will have gone to waste!

The Space Despot’s Beautiful Daughter, Episode 10 The Time Traveler, is now posted.

Gray-haired and venerable, what inner light gives the Time Traveler the strength of will to challenge the Crull the Cruel, despot of dozens of little worlds?

Episode 10: The Time Traveler

The aged mentor and friend of Jett Hazard, Melchizedek of Nebo, is exposed to tooth and claw of starved and drug-maddened monsters. Jett is caged, and looks on helplessly! From what quarter might salvation come?

Why has Phanes, the Prince of Illusions, assumed the splendid appearance he once bore of old? Why does he smile to himself?

And what of Princess Aspasia? Why is her mesmeric yet dangerous beauty not even mentioned once in this chapter? Has the author forgotten the exotic appeal of her crimson lip, her haughty eye?

The Legion of Time by Jack Williamson

Posted May 12, 2020 By John C Wright

This is not a review as much as a rebuttal.

Having a hankering to reread LEGION OF TIME by Jack Williamson, a classic of old timey pulp sci fi, I combed the internet, eventually to find where some good-natured soul had scanned in the pages of Astounding Magazine, which held the original, first-published version of the story.

The link is here: Luminist Archives. The issues are May, June and July of 1938.

During this search, I came across articles or reviews or summaries, at least a few — by my lights, too few, considering the seminal nature of this particular bit of adventure fiction.

What stumped and galled me was that the articles, reviews, and summaries were uniformly wrong.

Before rebutting them, let me describe the yarn the articles were wrong about.

Mary’s Shelter Virtual Soiree Tonight

Posted May 8, 2020 By Mrs. Wright

Jagi, here:

One of the highlights of the year for John and I is the speeches we hear at the Mary’s Shelter Soiree. This year, the Soiree is going virtual, and I just found out that it is tonight!

Mary’s Shelter Virtual Soiree Registration (It’s free.)

Mary’s Shelter is the “Pro-Choice” folks keep saying they want. Mary’s Shelter takes in pregnant women. It helps them have their babies, and it allows them to live there for up to THREE YEARS while going to school and finding a job. Also, it is one of the few charities that accepts women who already have children.

Mary’s Shelter is in Fredericksburg, VA, but the concept is now spreading across the country.

This is a fantastic charity, and, tonight, the wonderful speeches and stories they share at their fundraising soiree are available for anyone who wants to register.

Really worth the time.

Not Tired of Winning Yet CXI

Posted May 8, 2020 By John C Wright

From the Daily Wire:

Newly released transcripts from House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff’s (D-CA) closed door Russia investigation hearings show that former Obama officials and Schiff appeared to know that there was little to no evidence that the Trump campaign colluded with Russian officials during the 2016 election.

Not Tired of Winning Yet CIX

From Reason magazine:

On Wednesday, Education Secretary Betsy DeVos formally announced the new rules related to Title IX—the federal statute that governs sexual misconduct in schools…

… the new rules narrow the scope of actionable sexual harassment to exclude conduct that ought to be protected under the First Amendment.

#MaytheFourth Sale

Posted May 4, 2020 By John C Wright

Jagi here.

In honor of Star Wars Day (May the Fourth be with you. And also with your spirit.), The Last Straw  ebook is on sale for a whole $2 off.

Note Kylo Porg and the porg roasting the hotdog.

Come quibble about a galaxy far far away!

Once, in a theater long ago and far, far away, young audiences thrilled to the nostalgic space epic of yesteryear, known then only as STAR WARS, and were duly enthralled. So much goodwill, so much affection, so much love has rarely been lavished on any franchise. So much money from so many eager fans was never so readily available.

And yet, with one potent Deathstar-like blast of mind-breakingly awful film making, the Disney Corporation has managed to alienate that goodwill, spurn that affection, and lose that money. Why? What makes THE LAST JEDI so appallingly bad? What made the film maker think he could win over his audience by insulting his audience?

Science Fiction Grandmaster John C Wright laments, analyzes, and autopsies the horrific story-telling of a film that, for so many of us, was the last hope for STAR WARS, the last dime we will ever spend on this once-beloved franchise, and the last straw that broke our patience.

Get The Last Straw while the sale lasts!

Terrors of Pangaea on Sale!

Posted May 4, 2020 By John C Wright

Theogony Books says: What’s this week’s $0.99 quarantine book? It’s “Terrors of Pangaea” by John C. Wright. Like your scifi retro and pulpy? This book’s for you!

What do you do when you reach the end of all times?

Colonel Preston Lost is a man of many talents. One of the youngest to achieve the rank of colonel, Lost found himself unable to return to civilian life after the war. He was a man born at the wrong time. Chivalry was dead, and there were no more crusades or mighty deeds to be done.

Sport fishing and big game hunting became first a pastime, then an obsession, but the times were against him, and the nations outlawed such sport, as they did anything dangerous, rare, or worthy of manhood. Basically, anything he saw as “fun” or “challenging.” His aerospace plane had, at first, been merely another pastime.

And then he saw the unidentified flying object.

Lost didn’t think of himself as reckless. He believed in preparation, proper equipment, and patience in stalking the prey. But, in reality, he was not a cautious man. If he was, he wouldn’t have followed the spaceship into the black storm clouds above the Bermuda Triangle.

Now he’s at the end of time, having crash-landed on Pangaea Ultima with few supplies and no way of returning home. But Lost is a man of many talents, and anything should be possible for him. Or, is it possible that this time, Lost has met his match?

Get Terrors of Pangaea while it’s on sale!
