The Myth of the Conservative Christian

Posted June 29, 2020 By John C Wright

This is a reprint of a previous article I wrote in 2007.

I post it again today as a curio of things past. Few, if any, of these categories seem any longer to obtain.

We have seen a remarkable re-alignment of political orientations in the past half-decade: the Populism of Trump is now opposed by the Authoritarianism of the Left. The old liberal worldview, which favored colorblindness and free speech, is as dead as journalism.

I offer this merely to throw open a question to my readers: what are the wings of the two parties today?

* * *

There are six political parties in America, not two.

These six align themselves into the two major political parties for convenience, but the grouping is not harmonious or even.

The Space Despot’s Beautiful Daughter, Episode 16 Past and Future, is now posted.

This is the end! All secrets are made known, and the last blow is struck! Or is it…?

Episode 16: Past and Future

The beautiful raven-haired half-clad Aspasia, still smoking hot, curvaceous and callipygous not to mention livid with passion, bloody dagger high, menaces her rival, the fair-faced, pure and virginal half-naked Lethonee, whose slender yet voluptuous form shines in the darkness of the jovian eclipse, unfraid! What vision of the future do her lovely eyes behold?

The sun is about to break free of the shadow! What scene of bloodshed or redemption, death or life, will the flood of light reveal?

Priest Denies Communion to BLM

Posted June 24, 2020 By John C Wright

“As a priest in the Church, in good conscience I cannot give Holy Communion to anyone who is a member of a group that has so clearly sold itself to Satan.” — Father Joseph Gleason, Russian Orthodox.

Be ashamed, Catholics. None of ours show such spirit and holiness. At this point, I suggest we compromise on the Filioque controversy, and beg to be taken back into their their fold.

Please click through the link and read the whole thing. The Father lays out the case against Black Lying Marxists (as they should be called) with mental rigor, legal precision, and moral clarity. Read the remainder of this entry »

Not Tired of Winning Yet CXXVII

Posted June 22, 2020 By John C Wright

This story from three weeks ago escaped my attention. Just in case any of my dear readers likewise did not see it, I reprint it here:

With more than 4,100 National Guard soldiers and airmen moving onto the Twin Cities, state officials said Saturday police were in a stronger position to control unrest in the metro.

As the 8 p.m. curfew went into effect Saturday night, large crowds remained on the streets in Minneapolis. However, the situation quickly changed.

Around 8:45 p.m., officers began to fire tear gas, rubber bullets and flashbangs to disperse crowds near the Minneapolis Police Department’s Fifth Precinct. Officers later said rioters had attempted to force their way inside the building but the police station had since been secured.

Minnesota Department of Corrections Commissioner Paul Schnell said early Sunday morning that police and soldiers were still working to clear smaller groups off the streets that had splintered from larger crowds earlier in the night.

Universal Field Theory of Leftism

Posted June 20, 2020 By John C Wright

Here follows a reprint of a column from 2014, which I thought pertinent to the tumults preoccupying current headlines.

To see how a whole people can fail to discriminate between police and criminals, to pull down statues of abolitionists, or wear the neck-cloths of African tribes notorious for being slavers, all in the name of fighting imaginary neonazism, or how people can call both for gun confiscation and, without a blush or stammer,  for defunding the police, read on.

Universal Field Theory of Leftism

Do not be deceived: Leftism is an enigma. We need a theorem that explains not one or two aspects of Leftism, but all their traits.

The theory must explain, first, the honest decency of the modern liberals combined with their astonishing indifference, nay, hostility to facts, common sense, and evidence; second, it must explain their high self-esteem (or, to be blunt, their pathological narcissism) combined not merely with an utter lack of accomplishment, but with their utter devotion to destructiveness, a yearning to ruin everything they touch; third, it must explain their sanctimoniousness combined with their applause, praise, support, and tireless efforts to spread all perversions (especially sexual), moral decay, vulgarity, and every form of desecration; fourth, their pretense of intellectual superiority combined with their notorious mental fecklessness; fifth, it must explain both their violence and their pacifism; sixth, the theory must explain why they hate the very things they should love most; seventh, the theory must explain why they are incapable of comprehending an honest disagreement or any honorable foe.

And, while we are at it, if we could also explain why the Rich, who are routinely vilified by the Left number among its most ardent supporters, or the secular Jews, our theory would be very potent in its explanatory power.

There is such an explanation. I make no claim to have discovered this theory. It was discovered by Alan Bloom, back in the 1980’s, in his book THE CLOSING OF THE AMERICAN MIND, which he wrote to explain why the generation of the 1970’s was suddenly and remarkably stupider than any previous decade of his students.

The theory was popularized recently by Evan Sayet in his book KINDER GARDEN OF EDEN. Roots of this theory go back further yet: you will find an early articulation by C.S. Lewis in his seminal THE ABOLITION OF MAN, written a generation prior. And no doubt he learned his ideas from G.K. Chesterton in his ORTHODOXY, who wrote a generation prior again, and first diagnosed the error involved in Freethinkers (as they were called then) doubting one’s own ability to think.

Let us examine each one in order.

Why the Past Matters

Posted June 19, 2020 By John C Wright

Words every man in Christendom should hear. Surprisingly, there is no foul language in this video:

Arise, men of the West. Your heritage is being taken from you right before your eyes. Let not your eye be dimmed by fear, nor you tongue be still. Let not your pen be mute. Let your sword not sleep in its scabbard.

Let not your hearts be troubled.

A Question

Posted June 19, 2020 By John C Wright

Do Black live matter to Black Lives Matter?

If so,

  • Why not say Black Schools Matter, as we say?
  • Why not say Black School Choice Matters, as we say?
  • Why not say Black Families Matter, as we say?
  • Why not say Black Fathers Matter, as we say?
  • Why not say Black Marriages Matter, as we say
  • Why not say Black on Black Crime Matters, as we say?
  • Why not say Black Jobs Matter, Black Ownership Matters, Black Small Businesses Matter, as we say?
  • Why not say Black Unborn Lives Matter, as we say?
  • Why not say the God Matters Most of All who breathed the breath of life into Black Lives, and all lives? Why not say Black Churches Matter?

Not Tired of Winning Yet CXXVI

Posted June 18, 2020 By John C Wright

Again, while this is not, technically, and example of a campaign promise fulfilled by Mr. Trump, is it, in my judgment, a brilliant example of an awakening out of decades of sloth-induced self-deception, which the Trump himself is no more than the firstfruit and firealarm.

Mr. Damani Felder described himself as follows: Founder of YouTube’s The Right Brothers. MAGA. Texas A&M. Christian. Wordsmith. Opinions are my own.

Not Tired of Winning Yet CXXV

Posted June 18, 2020 By John C Wright

Do you remember how often alleged allies and concern trolls told us that calling out the Democrats for their racism was futile and wrongheaded?

Beverlin says Black Women are not about feminism. They marry their husbands and respect their husbands. That is not their community.

This wonderful woman is not my race — I identify as a Houyhnhnm — but she of my sister in Christ, and she is my fellow America whose blood is red, white and blue no less than mine.

Trump has a simple message for the Blacks in this nation: What the hell do you have to lose?

Note that the first half of this clip is talking politics, but the second half is preaching the Word. These women get it.

Advisory Council for the Legion of Doom

Posted June 16, 2020 By John C Wright

Introducing: Conflict Resolution Advisory Council for the Legion of Doom

We will form a unique system called the Conflict Resolution Advisory Council. Lex Luthor, our leader, will appoint three people to the Council.

To eliminate prejudice, we elect one Supervillain, one Femme Fatale, and one Super Ape with eerie mind powers. Each person should undergo at least one 45 minute villainy and political training session which we can help organize.

Whenever there is an internal conflict in the Legion of Doom, it will be put to the Council. Each supervillain will have an opportunity to present his side of the story to the Council to review. The Council members will decide on a fair resolution and provide it as advice.

Initially the Council will be advisory only. In the future the system could evolve to become more mature with binding resolutions, impositions, retribution, enforcement, torture, mind-alteration, and imprisonment.

The appointed supervillains will hear out and settle any internal disputes. We’re not suggesting that this Council members become police or judges, only referees in case of quarrels over divisions of loot, or by what slow deathtrap to kill the helpless superheroes. All death-traps, whether clown-themed, bird-themed, riddle-themed, ice-based, or radioactive will be given equal chance in rotation.

News from Woketopia

Posted June 16, 2020 By John C Wright

This has been represented to me as being from the Reddit for the autonomous zone in Seattle, trying to create a ‘Conflict Resolution Committee’.

This seems not to be parody, that is, not deliberately so, but I make no warrant.  The words below are theirs.

Introducing: Conflict Resolution Advisory Council

We will form a unique system called the Conflict Resolution Advisory Council. We hold a community democratic vote to appoint three people to the Council.

To eliminate prejudice, we elect one Black man, one Black woman, and one white woman. Each person should undergo at least one 45 minute sensitivity and political training session which we can help organize.

Whenever there is an internal conflict in the Zone, it will be put to the Council. Both people will have an opportunity to present their side of the story to the Council to review. The Council members will decide on a fair resolution and provide it as advice.

Initially the Council will be advisory only. In the future the system could evolve to become more mature with binding resolutions, impositions, retribution, enforcement, and imprisonment.

The appointed people will hear out and settle any internal disputes within the Zone. We’re not suggesting that this Council members become leaders or judges, only referees in case of internal conflicts.

Gene Wolfe, Genre Work, and Literary Duty

Posted June 14, 2020 By John C Wright

A reader recently wrote and asked me about this column, which first saw print in 2013, lo, these many moons ago. I thought to reprint it here because some of the observations remain timely, and it might be of interest to any new readers.

Gene Wolfe, Genre Work, and Literary Duty

Sometimes in this life we see justice done.

The Nebula Awards have just honored Gene Wolfe with a Grandmastership. The honor is overdue, and all lovers of literature should rejoice. Gene Wolfe is the Luis Borges of North America.

He is the greatest living author writing in the English language today, and I do not confine that remark to genre authors. I mean he is better than any mainstream authors at their best, better in the very aspects of the craft in which they take most pride.

The beauty, nuance, and manner of his prose, the depth and realism of his characterization, his ability to give each character a unique and memorable voice and speech-mannerism, the profundity of the themes he addresses, the dry and trenchant wit, the relevance to daily concerns, the ability to open the eyes of the readers to the horror and wonder of life — I defy anyone to name his superior in craft and execution either in the genre or out of it.

With no little satisfaction, I was contemplating this victory for one of my favorite authors (not to mention a fellow member of the famous Secret Conspiracy of Catholic Science Fiction Authors) when I was reminded of the larger question:

When we honor an author, if the honor is not just flattery but is honestly meant, then we are honoring him for his skill, inspiration, and pertinacity in accomplishing a goal we admire. What is the goal of science fiction?

The obvious answer is that we science fiction writers, like all entertainers, are paid to tell entertaining tales, and must not cheat the audience who pays us of what they have a right to expect in return.

That answer is sound enough as far as it goes, but it begs the larger question of what constitutes honest entertainment. What is it? More importantly, what is it for?

The Thin Blue Line (a Guest Post)

Posted June 13, 2020 By John's Web Support

[This is a guest post by the webmaster. This column is from the Loyal Opposition, a fellow Catholic and a conservative. Please answer with more courtesy and forbearance than social media usually provokes.]

I’ve been thinking about the “Thin Blue Line” for a month now, even before all this. For any who have seen the flags but never heard the meaning defined beyond “showing support for the police”, it is the assertion that police are “the thin blue line” between society and violent chaos. It is the mindset that police are a noble minority (a *thin* line of blue) confronting hostile savages and keeping them at bay.

There is nothing noble about viewing the community which you are supposed to protect and serve as savages. That mindset is an anathema to good policing. How do you assist and de-escalate when you view the people you are policing as sub-human? It doesn’t work, and we see that in a myriad of ways (such as the number of POC that, taking the police at their word that they’re there for their protection, call them for help only to have the police show up and arrest — or, worse yet, shoot — them).
