Time to Reconsider Part III

Posted October 30, 2020 By John C Wright

Part of an ongoing discussion on the wisdom of repealing the 19th Amendment.

I think the starting point of the argument is so alien to modern conceptions, that it needs to be brought to the center of our attention, and examined.

I propose that there are certain duties that adhere to men simply because they are men, and should act the part.

The duty, on a sinking ship, for example, to stand aside and let women and children first board the lifeboats is one such. For men of military age, to serve when drafted I take to be another, as the masculine duty to defend one’s family and clan in the state of nature extends to the city and kingdom and nation in the state of civilization.

A libertarian would say nay, that we have only the duties each man voluntarily affirms himself him to have. What say you?

It is Time to Reconsider, part II — Repeal 19

Posted October 29, 2020 By John C Wright

Counsel for the Prosecution offers Exhibits that the 19th Amendment should be reconsidered:

Counsel for the Defense asks: Are these hysterics motivated by a political ideology? Or possessed by demons?

Because if what we are seeing is not the fault of a political ideology, then a political solution will not solve it.

Perhaps another solution is called for.

Repeal 22

Posted October 28, 2020 By John C Wright

An advertisement in favor of repeal of the 22nd Amendment.

This ad did not convince me to join the movement being promoted, but seeing the responses and replies from weeping and anxiety-ridden Leftists appended to the Twitter entry of this vid, a deep and solemn sense of schadenfreude convinces me of the desirability of the repeal.

Twelve more years!

All Men Dream of Earthwomen, Noetic File 18.0 Coriolis Landing Fall, Revisited, is now posted.

Noetic File 18.0: Coriolis Landing Fall, Revisited

This is the famous conflagration scene, which has been imitated countless times, most notably by Vertumnia in the Andros Agonistes.

These passages are also the basis of the scholarly theory that the Narrator was addressing Isolationists from Mother Earth in his recitation, Luddites, Amish, or Antimachinists, since no colonist nor child of a colonist could possibly have never seen an open flame, nor need to have it described to him.

The influence of Mark Twain, pre-Diaspora philosopher, raconteur, and text-composer, can be seen in the passage where the narrator steels himself for an heroic deed, namely, the idea that courage is the mastery, not the absence, of fear.

Not Tired of Winning Yet CL

As seems apt for my #150 of the list of campaign promises kept by Trump, and other signs and wonders that flow from his history-mugging presidency:

Judge Amy Coney Barrett took her constitutional oath on Monday at the White House. The Supreme Court said in a press release that Barrett will be able to start her new role after Chief Justice John Roberts administers her judicial oath on Tuesday. Justice Clarence Thomas administered the constitutional oath at Monday’s ceremony.

One of Joe Biden’s “tells” (as a gambler might say) is his use of the phrase “C’mon”.

Another is his nervous laughter, or shaking his head dismissively. Such smirks is meant to appeal to the viewer, asking the viewer to dismiss the point being discussed without any further ado.

Not Tired of Winning Yet CXLVIII

Posted October 24, 2020 By John C Wright

Again, this is several days after the fact, but I am getting tired of winning, because there is too much. Too much winning. I can barely keep up merely posting a link, much less writing a comment.

From Fox News:

President Trump received yet another Nobel Peace Prize nomination, his fourth, from one Laura Huhtasaari, the Finnish member of the European Parliament.

She writes in her nomination letter:

“It is hard to imagine a president of the United States from the last decades, or a current head of state, who would deserve more the Committee’s recognition in 2021 than President Trump for his effort to build peace in the world…”

Huhtasaari lists Trump’s peacemaking efforts as:

  • The only American president who did not start a new war
  • Withdrew troops from Iraq and Afghanistan
  • Brokered the establishment of full diplomatic relations between Israel, the UAE, and Bahrain.
  • Maintained national cohesion and secured law and order by taking a strong stand against detrimental social movements.

This last, we may assume to be a reference to Black Lives Marxists and Antifas.

Trump brokered an historic Israel-Sudan peace deal

The agreement is the third of its kind in recent weeks between Israel and an Arab nation and follows similar agreements with the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain. President Trump said at least five additional Arab countries could join peace deals with Israel, including Saudi Arabia.

To his credit, President Trump rejected the advice of the foreign policy establishment — especially State Department careerists — that the first step toward normalized relations between Israel and the Arab world had to be an Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement.

Donald Trump just signed the United States up to the Geneva Consensus Declaration, a worldwide pact signed by 32 countries, affirming that there is “no international right to abortion.”

https://www.hhs.gov/about/agencies/oga/global-health-diplomacy/protecting-life-global-health-policy/geneva-declaration.html

The official announcement reads, in part:

The governments of the Brazil, Egypt, Hungary, Indonesia, Uganda and the United States cosponsored a virtual October 22, 2020 gathering in Washington, D.C. for a multinational ceremonial signing of the Geneva Consensus Declaration

This Declaration further strengthens the coalition to achieve these four pillars: (1) better health for women, (2) the preservation of human life, (3) strengthening of family as the foundational unit of society, and (4) protecting every nation’s national sovereignty in global politics. For example, it is the sovereign right of every nation to make their own laws in regard to abortion, absent external pressure.

Not Your Parents’ Christian Fantasy

A book by my publisher, Russell Newquist of Silver Empire, edited by my beautiful and talented wife:

When he came home, so did they…

Driven by vengeance, Michael Alexander enlisted in the Army the day after 9/11. Five years later, disillusioned and broken by the horrors he witnessed in Afghanistan, Michael returns home to Georgia seeking to begin a new life. But he didn’t come alone. Something evil followed him, and it’s leaving a path of destruction in its wake.

The police are powerless. The Army has written Michael off. Left to face down a malevolent creature first encountered in the mountains of Afghanistan, he’ll rely on his training, a homeless prophet, and estranged family members from a love lost…

But none of them expected the dragon.

Jim Butcher’s Harry Dresden collides with Larry Correia’s Monster Hunter International in this supernatural thriller that goes straight to Hell!

Posted October 22, 2020 By John C Wright

One of our regular commentors here has asked me to help boost the publicity of his new novel. Here is the announcement:

Last Voyage of the Brandy’s Lament

https://rustedirony.wordpress.com/

Business has been lean for Knut Heyerdahl, the centenarian tramp freighter captain of the antiquated Caravan-class cargo ship, The Brandy’s Lament. His crew, a drug-addicted engineer, a number-crunching navigator with tone-deaf social manners, and a hot-tempered muscular Portuguese woman load master makes his life stressful as he bails them out of trouble at their latest port of call.

But beggars can’t be choosers, and a ship’s captain down on his luck must make the best of a bad hand. If things weren’t tough enough, being behind on payments to a loan shark who wants the title to his ship doesn’t help. Fortunately, a last minute shipping contract comes his way, and the chance to escape his troubles seem bright.

Then everything begin to go wrong.

A passenger ship full of diplomat’s children is hijacked. A Rim patrol ship is unwittingly embroiled in a David verses Goliath spaceship battle. Suddenly the Brandy’s crew are the only ones who can stop an intergalactic civil war from breaking out and prevent planets being razed into blacken ciders. Follow a crew of misfits forced to become unlikely heroes to stop a secret conspiracy to ignite the universe in flames for political gain and profit.

Marymae Lives!

Posted October 21, 2020 By Mrs. Wright

Jagi, here.  Some years ago, I received a fan letter from a charming 15 year old, whom you have all come to know as John’s dancing fangirl and some of you know as the dancing cow or as a writer of quality short stories: A. M. Freeman. Back when she was still a teen, she sent me a story she had written. Today, that story–buffed and polished–goes live, complete with lovely illustrations.

Presenting:

Marymae is a little girl with big problems! First, no one will believe her imaginary friend is real…

And then he goes missing!

Marymae must set out to find her friend. But she soon discovers something scary is happening in the Forest of Make-Believe. Those that were noble are now hiding. Dangerous creatures lurk in the shadows. And a growing darkness threatens to engulf even the bravest heart. If Marymae and her friends can’t stop it in time, the nightmares will spread across all the worlds, including her own! Enjoy the journey with her as she discovers how to be a light to inspire courage in those around her, and how to love even the most broken heart.

Pick up this illustrated novelette and join the characters on their journey as they spring from one challenge to the next. A refreshing light to illuminate a mundane day, or to enjoy reading with your children.

See Marymae and the Nightmare Man on Amazon

And here is an article that she wrote for Evangelizing Fandom. Unfortunately, she couldn’t really discuss the part of the story I found most satisfying from a Christian perspective, because it was a major spoiler, so I will just say, the solution to Marymae’s troubles are not as simple as a non-Christian might imagine.  ;-)
