The Electoral College

Posted November 29, 2020 By John C Wright

I was asked to write an explanation or defense of the Electoral College, but I find I am unable to do so. The idea of the president being selected from a temporary body, beholden to no special interests, existing for a sole purpose and too briefly to be open to pressure or corruption, is too obviously wise, sage, fair and sound to need any defense.

Nor am I imaginative to invent serious objections to it. It has no drawbacks, no weaknesses.

Not Tired of Winning Yet CLIII

Posted November 28, 2020 By John C Wright

A trial judge blocks Pennsylvania vote certification.

Pennsylvania state court  Judge Patricia A. McCullough on Friday, issued a Memorandum of Opinion holding that PA preliminary election certification injunction that took place on November 21, was properly issued, and should be upheld.

You can read the Opinion here.

In other words, the opinion upholds an injunction from a case from earlier in the week. This is not one of the Trump cases: a group of Republican lawmakers and candidates brought a lawsuit arguing that the state legislature’s mail-in voting law—Act 77—violated the commonwealth’s constitution.

This preliminary injunction prevents Pennsylvania from taking any further steps to perfect its certification of the election, including but not limited to appointment of electors and transmission of necessary paperwork to the Electoral College, pending further court hearings and rulings.

Let me explain the significance:

Halfway

Posted November 27, 2020 By John C Wright

We are only halfway into the Trump Administration.

Trump’s second term will be, if anything, more amazing and more victorious than his first.

A manned Mars mission is afoot, and, perhaps, two more Supreme Court nominations.

And huge steps will be taken toward draining the swamp, now that the actions of the Swamp Creatures are large and obvious enough for any with eyes to see.

Quote from R.A. Lafferty

Posted November 23, 2020 By John C Wright

This is from PAST MASTER by R.A. Lafferty. Like many a work of his, the satire is so sharp it burns like acid.

In this scene, Thomas More, philosopher, author, statesman, and the author of UTOPIA, has been brought forward by time travelers, perhaps by mistake, to be elevated by fake election to be world-leader of the perfect planet, Golden Astrobe which, inexplicably, is dying of its imperfections.

I suspect R.A. Lafferty selected Thomas More as his protagonist, because he is that rare combination of saint and lawyer. The two professions rarely mix.

Sick and Tired of Fake News

Posted November 20, 2020 By John C Wright

So I read the following screaming headline:

Georgia governor certifies presidential electors for Biden

…Sounds like bad news for the side of the angels, don’t it?

Then my logical, legalistic, lawyerly mind fell upon the words down around the final paragraph:

Now that the results are certified, Trump’s campaign will have two business days to request a recount since the margin is within 0.5%.

In other words, nothing has been decided yet. Read the remainder of this entry »

In Case You Were Wondering

Posted November 19, 2020 By John C Wright

In case you were wondering about my unshakable optimism in the face of what seems insurmountable odds, I note that events are unfolding in a way those promises greater victory, and deeper, than if Trump merely had won in a landslide.

The Trump legal team here makes an opening statement to the court of public opinion.

Noetic File 21.0: The Founder of the Ancient Order of Archivists

The Narrator reveals his disguise, and his employer reveals his true intent. The two make a wager concerning felicity and woe. The exchange is relatively straightforward: on such a simple basis of this passage, is all our elaborate customs of the nuptial wager, curtsey and dower betting, and the laws and gambling practices surrounding.

The Mirror of Narcissus

Posted November 16, 2020 By John C Wright

This column is one that is the most important I have ever written … but important, I suppose, to none but me.

I rather suspect most readers already know the answer to the questions that have for so long baffled, fascinated, and pestered me.

I have long wondered why each and every writer of a certain political persuasion is utterly and entirely unable to pen a good story, or even an average one, or even an acceptable one.

Here is my answer.

What They Want You to Believe

Posted November 14, 2020 By John C Wright

Saw this in a random combox, and thought it was one of the clearest summation of the talking points of the Empire of Lies yet seen, in all their glorious absurdity:

What They Want You To Believe:

  • They want you to believe that the Man who proclaims “America First” is bad for our country.
  •  The Man who fights against The Swamp, is the corrupt one.
  •  The Man who says we should stand for the National Anthem, is a tyrant and a dictator.
  •  The Man recently nominated for four Nobel Peace Prizes is an existential threat to the World.
