Voice of Reason 15: Equality and Envy

Posted March 20, 2022 By John C Wright

Voice of Reason posts the next installment of the Last Crusade oration:
Last Crusade 15: Equality and Envy.
The Last Crusade takes up arms against a fallen world.
The Enemy says equality is craving the unearned and unobtainable. This is not equality, but envy, the opium of misery.

Ad Hominem and Illusion

Posted March 18, 2022 By John C Wright

A quote from Victor Davis Hanson well worth regarding, but which, among civilized men, would be understood, without needing to be said.

It is not “un-American” to point out that prior American appeasement under the Obama and the Biden Administrations explains not why Putin wished to go into Ukraine, but why he felt he could. It is not “treasonous” to say Ukraine and the United States previously should have stayed out of each other’s domestic affairs and politics—but still do not excuse Putin’s savage aggression. It is not “traitorous” to admit that Russia for centuries relied on buffer states between Europe—lost when its Warsaw Pact satellite members joined NATO after its defeat in the Cold War. But that reality also does not justify Putin’s savage attack.

No Award (Part One)

Posted March 17, 2022 By John C Wright

The following is a guest column by Chris Chan,  the first of eight parts, to be published in this space over the next few weeks. The topic is a tidbit of inglorious Science Fiction fandom history in which I played a small part, known of old as the Sad Puppies Kerfuffle, and hence might be of interest to my readers.

The Hugo Awards, Sad Puppies, and Sci-Fi/Fantasy Literature
Part I: What’s Happening with the Hugos?

By Chris Chan

Introduction

This is the first of a series of articles, serving as an overview of one of the biggest controversies to divide fans of science fiction and fantasy in recent years.  It’s the story of clashing perspectives and strong opinions, and how literature and fandom can both unite and divide.  It is the hope of this author that these articles can serve as a means of building bridges and mending fences.  However, given the vitriolic emotions in some quarters, this may be too optimistic a hope.

Interview with Tim Powers

Posted March 16, 2022 By John C Wright

A reader with the feminine but Johannine name of Jeanine brings this link to my attention:

An interview with Tim Powers: https://podcasts.apple.com/…

The podcast rejoices in the delightful name “I might believe in fairies” — which, for my money, all fair-minded gentlemen of letters should.

I am an admirer both of the man and his work, and consider him to be a conspirator with me to infiltrate the wilderness of science fiction with some wholesome yet awesome old-school Catholic spirit.

While I have your ear, dear reader, let me recommend both ANUBIS GATES and ON STRANGER TIDES to your reading lists.

It is perhaps a breach of net etiquette to reprint an entire column in this space, but perhaps forgivable considering the need for foghorns to warn of coming collision within the fog of war, and the smokescreen of culture war.

A quote from John C Wright

Posted March 16, 2022 By John C Wright

Mark Judge quoted me in an article on the absurdity of the Esquire Magazone’s recent list of the “best fantasy works of all time” — a list that did not have Robert E Howard on it, but put NK Jemisin at the top of the list, above JRR Tolkien — meaning the list was “the most woke fantasy works of the season.”

Here is the link.

The Cunning Man, Chapter 11: Truncheons and Lamps

Posted March 16, 2022 By John C Wright

The Cunning Man, Chapter 11: Truncheons and Lamps is now posted.

We see the vindication of a Lake and the downfall of a witch, unless we see the opposite. The Cunning Man is once more set upon the road, and we learn whether he will be warm or cold.

Here ends the tale of the Cunning Man. In this space, next  week, if fate allows, we meet the Vagrants of Time.

No One Has Bothered to Ask

Posted March 16, 2022 By John C Wright

I have the dubious joy of being called a traitor by one of my beloved readers, because of my alleged disloyalty to our nation’s liege, Vladimir Zelensky (assuming his elevation to power was lawful, of course). I crave no enmity from any customer, but he may be taking more offense than was offered.

Sadly, my accuser neither asked me to which republic I have pledged allegiance — it is to the Commonwealth of Virginia, and the other unimportant member states in our federation — nor what was my opinion of the war in Eastern Europe.

I have offered no conclusions erenow because they are tentative. The fog of war clouds nearly all, and the loudest voices on the issues are the ones I trust least.

For the record, and because no one has bothered to ask me my opinion, I hold that Putin’s invasion of the Ukraine is entirely without legitimate casus belli.

In the Empire of Lies

Posted March 14, 2022 By John C Wright

Our own Rudolph Harrier reports search results slants. For example, on a search for the terms “Sad Puppies Hugo Awards” he got:

Google: Wikipedia page, followed by many pages lamenting about a right wing hate campaign taking over the Hugos.
Bing: Similar to google, but with more pages talking about later Hugo awards rather than 2015 and 2016.
Brave: Similar to the last two, but with more fansites showing up (all left leaning, including file770.)

He remarks: “Notably on this one, not a single search engine pulled up anything from Larry Correia or Brad Torgersen.”

The persistence of malignant untruth is disheartening, but not surprising.
