Christmastide

Posted December 26, 2023 By John C Wright

Some say that ever ‘gainst that season comes
Wherein our Saviour’s birth is celebrated,
The bird of dawning singeth all night long:
And then, they say, no spirit dare stir abroad;
The nights are wholesome; then no planets strike,
No fairy takes, no witch has power to charm,
So hallow’d and gracious is the time. –Hamlet

In keeping with the tradition here at John C. Wright’s Journal, I reprint, as I do each year, this list the feasts of the Twelve Days of Christmas, and to urge my fellow traditionalists to continue the Christly and Christian work of Keeping the Feast and Partyin’ On! Let us pause for unsolemn reflection on these solemnities.

The Golden Age Ep. 36: Last Words

Posted December 20, 2023 By John C Wright

Excerpts from THE GOLDEN AGE, my debut novel from 2001.

In the far future, where humans have become as gods, living lives of perfect peace and prosperity, Phaethon of Rhadamanthus House discovers centuries of his memory are lost. Like his namesake, has flown too high, and must be cast down: for he has committed the one act the Golden Age forbids, to have ambitions higher than utopia can contain. Now his quest is to find himself.

The Pope and Blessing Sodomites

Posted December 19, 2023 By John C Wright

The mainstream media, hereafter called the Voice of Sauron, is agitated and enthused by the rumors, concocted, as it happens, by the Voice of Sauron alone, that Pope Francis has permitted the blessing of sodomite marriage unions.

As with most things uttered by the Voice of Sauron, this is not merely a falsehood but the diametric opposite of the truth.

This is not even a case where the Pope spoke in ambiguous language creating an opening for scandal. It is merely a lie.

The document signed by the Pope says the Church does not have the power to impart blessings on unions of persons of the same sex.

Epistle to Ansgar: Letter 02

Posted December 18, 2023 By John C Wright

17 December AD 2023, Gaudete Sunday

Dear Godson,

This day is “Gaudete” Sunday, which is the third Sunday in Advent. Church candles and churchmen are garbed in vestments of rose-red, but everyone calls it pink. It is the Sunday of Joy, for Gaudete is the Latin word for rejoicing.

Advent includes four weeks leading up to Christmas, which is the nativity of Our Lord. On this day the Lord God Almighty came to earth as a helpless baby, small enough to hold in your arms, cradling his little head in your hand. He was prophet, priest and prince from the moment of his birth, and the worldly kings sought his life both then and thereafter. There is nothing worldly powers hate more than heavenly powers.

God’s Passions and Man’s Reason

Posted December 18, 2023 By John C Wright

A reader writes in with deep questions that I attempt, at least in part, to address. I thought my readers might be interested in the exchange.

His first question was whether God experiences emotions sequentially in response to human events?

My answer was that no one knows, and I doubt anyone can imagine, what it might be in eternity to look in on events in time, while knowing the beginning and ending of those events, seeing them all at once.

A helpful analogy for me (since I am an author) is to look at the inspiration for a story.

The Nicholas Book by Wm Newsom

Posted December 15, 2023 By John C Wright

A fan and friend of mine, Mr. William Chad Newsom, has penned a book that sounds fascinating. I am eager to attract readers to it, even if (alas!) I have not had time yet to read it myself. Here is his description:

Pastor Douglas Wilson tells of a family who told their little girl that Santa Claus was not real, and received this reply: “Is Jesus real?” In a world filled with doubters and skeptics, who needs one more thing to confuse our children?

To work through my own views on the various Christmas legends surrounding St. Nicholas, and to discover just what I needed to teach my children, I wrote The Nicholas Book: A Legend of Santa Claus.

If it comes down to a choice between losing Santa or losing Jesus, then Santa will have to go. But if it was possible to keep the Santa story, then I needed a story my children could grow into—not a story they would be forced to grow out of. As it stands now, children have to grow out of the Santa story, which is a sure sign that something is wrong. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

Giving Atheists a Chance to Give God a Chance

Posted December 14, 2023 By John C Wright
This is an excerpt from a lecture from 2015, perhaps worth repeating, in part:

As an ex-atheist, I should have at least some credentials when addressing the core issue of our age:

What can reach the atheist, who is lost and floundering out in the darkness he calls enlightenment?

The first thing to recall is that we alone can do nothing.

It is the Holy Spirit that converts the skeptic.

For reasons too mysterious to comprehend, God, who created us in His own image, gave us freedom of the will akin to His own. He will allow us freely to fling ourselves into the hellfire if that is what we freely wish.

Therefore the Holy Spirit will stand at the door of the atheist heart and knock, but not enter unless invited.

Epistles to Ansgar: Letter 01

Posted December 8, 2023 By John C Wright

7 December AD 2023, Feast Day of St. Ambrose

Dear Godson,

To instruct you in the mysteries of the faith is the duty and joy of a godfather. It falls on a godfather to introduce, as best he may, to his godson the God who is to Our Father in Heaven, and tell of His wonders.

This is an auspicious day to begin the task for Saint Ambrose, whose feast today it is, is famed for reconciling the opposite parties when controversy divided the Church.

So might these letters aid you in finding fit words to say to tell of the faith within you, and to explain with those who have ears to hear how the gift from God called reason and the gift from God called faith are not now, and can never be, at odds.

But where to begin?

Were I to teach you geometry, beloved godson, it would be proper to begin at the premises and common notions and definitions, for these are the beginning of that study. But the faith is in all things and informs all things, and so anywhere is a proper beginning: all roads lead to Rome.

So I will start with this letter, this sentence. I am late in writing it. Alas, I take up my pen tardily, but readily. I meant to do this yesterday, but it slipped my mind.

Therefore let me be an example for you: In later years, when you find yourself to have fallen short, perhaps less perfect in charity than you should have been, do not allow this imperfection to hinder the speed at which you will begin to repent and to make amends.

Even in so small as thing as failing to remember to write a letter, we Sons of Adam know what is right, and we do not do it. We are imperfect beings who cannot escape the longing for perfection.

Why is that? What is man?

Europe Died in Auschwitz

Posted December 8, 2023 By John C Wright

As ever, I ban for anti-Semitic remarks.

In the spirit of fairness, I will ban for remarks repeating any Anti-Defamation-League-style anti-Japhetic remarks.  (Anti-Japhetism, also called Anti-Whitism, is the hatred of Europeans in general and Christians in particular, and includes recklessly false accusations of Fascism, Supremacism, and Anti-Semitism.) I regret living in a time, and among a people, for whom such a warning is necessary.

The following is a copy of an article written under the pen name Sebastián Vivar Rodríguez appearing in the anti-Communist website Gentiuno [11 Nov 2004]. The original version of “Europe Died in Auschwitz” has been deleted from the website.

My comment is below the column.

***   ***   ***

I walked down the streets in Barcelona and suddenly discovered a terrible truth: Europe died in Auschwitz. We killed six million Jews and replaced them with 20 million Muslims. In Auschwitz we burned a group of people who represented culture, thought, creativity, talent.

We destroyed the chosen people, truly chosen, because they produced great and wonderful people who made great contributions to the world, and thus changed the world.

Review THE SHIFT

Posted December 6, 2023 By John C Wright

THE SHIFT is a 2023 film written and directed by Brock Heasley that combines Christian themes in a science fiction dystopian multiverse setting.

It is a triumph and a wonder of a film, certainly the best film made in years, unfortunately marred by an unclear theme leading to an underwhelming ending.

The tale concerns one Kevin Garner, Wall Street banker, with loving wife and child, health and wealth, who loses one after another, when he wakes from an accident to discover he has been shifted into a parallel world of dystopian misery.

45 Minutes of Footage Oct 7th

Posted December 2, 2023 By John C Wright

Jerry Dunleavy is the Author of KABUL: THE UNTOLD STORY OF BIDEN’S FIASCO, an Investigator for @HouseForeignGOP and Ex-DOJ Reporter @DCExaminer. The words below are his, which I reprint without comment.

Read the original here

I was recently among those who was shown the roughly 45 minutes of raw footage of the October 7th terrorist massacre committed by Hamas.

The brutal and evil footage was compiled by the Israeli government and shown by the Israeli embassy on Capitol Hill this week. The videos and photos came from GoPro body cameras, cell phones, CCTV cameras, and social media posts. Some of the videos were recorded by Hamas terrorists, and some were recorded by the victims themselves, with many of the videos put together in a sequential order or from the POV of both terrorist and victim during the commission of a specific series of atrocities.

The Israeli government said the 45 minute compilation was pulled together from hundreds of hours of images & videos, and so the footage was just “a glimpse of what happened that day.”

No cell phones or recording devices were allowed in the room as the footage played, but I took pages of disturbing notes.

A constant theme from the footage is the celebratory and jubilant nature of the Hamas terrorists as they murder innocent Israelis, and their vocal belief that these murders were being carried out for Allah.

Some of the most disturbing footage is from the Hamas massacre at the Re’im music festival and from the Hamas rampages at kibbutzim, as well as Hamas terrorists gunning down cars of civilians or people on foot who are trying to flee the massacres.
