Exiled to the Twenty First Century

Posted May 31, 2016 By John C Wright

Imagine you came across a group of little men playing ninepins, who hexed you into an enchanted sleep. Upon waking, and finding yourself with a long, gray beard, you explored the strange country around you.

The new nation is called the Twenty First Century. It looks somewhat like the country from which you had been exiled, but that similarity makes the strangeness all the more galling.

That is precisely what happened to me. And I curse the little men, not merely because they took from me so much I loved, but imposed upon me exile into a place whose language is strange, whose manners are barbaric, and whose customs are abhorrent, not just to decency, but to sanity itself.

The Twenty Firsters speak what sounds like English, but there are many nonsense words, or words that mean the opposite of English words. For example, instead of saying ‘sex’ they say gender, which is a part of speech. Instead of dating the calendar from by the year A.D., which means Anno Domini, they date it from C.E., which means nothing. Instead of saying ‘man’ to refer to human beings, and using ‘he’ in the correct grammatical form (unless the antecedent is or must be female, he is used) Twenty Firsters use ‘they’ or ‘he/she’ or ‘ae’ or some other circumlocution.

They are afraid of something called ‘hate speech’, which is nowhere defined or explained. Nothing is defined or explained in this new nation called the Twenty First Century. Under the theory that words expressing dispraise or discontent with any special, protected group will cause spontaneous physical violence to manifest from nowhere against that group, the Twenty-Firsters have made not the violence illegal, but the speech.

A man from my country would realize, of course, that this is the same argument once used by the pro-totalitarian monarchist Thomas Hobbes to justify censorship. A man from my country would be aware of centuries of political philosophy since the time of Hobbes’ writing which had thoroughly exploded and discredited the Hobbesian theory.

But the Twenty-Firsters neither read Hobbes nor any philosophy.

Intellectual effort requires precision and diligence of thought, and they are a spontaneous and unthinking peoples, trained by four years or more of higher education to despise all attempts at thinking as sinister, or vainglorious, or futile, or all of the above.

The strangeness of the strange new country for a long while hides, beneath its harlequin face-paint, a truly hideous visage, akin to the malefic vision of the face of hell. One does not see how bad it is at first glance, because a natural decency and sense of goodwill makes it hard to believe the lunatics mean their lunacy to be taken at face value.

Let us pause to reflect upon a few examples, taken in no particular order.

Reviewer Praise for IRON CHAMBER OF MEMORY

Posted May 31, 2016 By John C Wright

Mr. Russell Newquist has some kind words to say about my latest work:

Iron Chamber of Memory Book Review

And yes, I do mean masterpiece. This isn’t just one of Mr. Wright’s finest works, although it is definitely that. It also now occupies a spot as one of my favorite fantasy works of all time. Yes, this work is really that good. …

The book is a deeply romantic (something that is lost in modern society), and contains a wonderful mystery that will keep you reading. And although I guessed one of the major twists quite early on, I truly didn’t quite see where the story was heading. It’s also a deeply spiritual story, and it reminded me quite a bit of one or two of the stories in The Book of Feasts and Seasons. Most surprising from Mr. Wright, however, is how deeply sensual the story is.

This is truly a fantastic tale, and I can’t recommend it enough. I give this one five stars out of five… and frankly, I find myself wishing for a sixth to give it.

Hear, Hear

Posted May 31, 2016 By John C Wright

Here is another man’s opinion on the desecration of Captain America I’d like to bring to your attention. Mr. Tanaka pens a column titled Why What Happens to Captain America Matters

A few choice quotes:

But the triviality of it is precisely what makes it important, because it is in such things that the real mindset of these people is revealed. Someone might be hesitant to claim that anyone who is concerned about millions of Muslims flooding Europe is literally a Nazi is less hesitant to put their words into the mouth of a fictional character who is a Nazi. Nick Spencer, the man who produced this offal, might not care to claim in public that he believes America is an essentially evil nation, but by turning Captain America into a Nazi, he’s essentially saying that in the oblique language of literature.

You see, fiction and art and “pop culture” in general are the weak spots in the dam of civilization. They are the points where the flood of chaos and barbarism can most easily work its way through and subvert the whole structure. And they are weak precisely because they are trivial: because most people don’t pay attention to them, or think it worth protesting when writers slip in a poisonous idea.

Clearly the desire here is to say to readers “America and Nazism are basically the same thing, and anyone who claims to stand for freedom and justice and right is a self-righteous hypocrite trying to control you. Avoid anything that smacks of self-sacrifice or objective truth or liberty and turn to self-indulgence and the self-centered disinterestedness in your fellow man that goes by the name of ‘tolerance.’”

At least, that’s the message I get from this move.

Possibly I’m wrong and this is just a cheap attempt to grab some publicity by violating a beloved piece of American culture and then preening yourself for doing so. It’s still evil, only now it’s the evil of someone so self-obsessed that he doesn’t even comprehend the idea of conveying a message …

Our culture today is black and growing blacker. It’s a polluted river that flows thick with the raw sewage spewed from diseased minds, and it will remain that way as long as we’re reluctant to point out how vile it is because we think it’s too trivial to mention.

By all means, read the whole thing:

What’s in a Name?

Posted May 27, 2016 By John C Wright

The term ‘conservative’ was invented by the ‘progressives’ to describe anyone who was not a progressive. Like goyim, gentile, or heathen, it is just a word that says what you are not.

Now, obviously, no one is in favor of ‘progress’ without some notion of the goal toward which one is progressing. In the case of Progressives, the goal is socialism in slow stages (Wilsonian Socialism, New Deal Socialism, Fabian Socialism, and Communism).

The word was a propaganda term only, because people like things that are new and exciting. And so the Progressives called themselves ‘NEW!’ and called their enemies ‘OLD!’

But age has nothing to do with anything. The so called Progressives have certain ideals (solipsism, untruth, aberration, death, perversion totalitarianism, nihilism)  and these define their goals. They are driving toward tribalism and a police state, and all the ancient horrors left behind in the bronze age, left behind as two-year-old levels of moral insight. The goal is called progress only in the sense of being precisely the opposite.

Like them, we who oppose them, we have certain ideals, and these define our goals. I identify as a conservative, because when I call myself any other name, no one knows what I mean.

We conservatives have seven core beliefs:

1. Reality is real. Reality is not optional.

2. Speech which does not conform to reality is falsehood; thought, madness.

3. Beauty is real, and ennobles the soul; ugliness is foul, and fit for satire only. Beauty is not in the eye of the beholder.

4.Human life from conception until natural death is sacred; animal life is livestock; abortion and euthanasia are satanic.

5. Virginity and monogamy are sacred; polygamy is adultery, and adultery is a crime; sodomy is a crime against nature, or a mental disease, or both.

In order to justify vices in sexual areas, the enemy denounces the concept of virtue and vice. While the sexual arena is the only topic where moral relativism is preached seriously (no adulterer thinks smoking cigarettes is not evil, but instead merely a matter of personal opinion), the more general attack on virtue itself requires the comment about chastity to be expanded to other virtues:

Actions which do not conform to reason are vice, and those that do are virtue. It is only by the practiced habit of virtuous acts that virtue is gained, and reason comes to rule the passions.

The four cardinal virtues are fortitude, prudence, temperance, and justice.

Using reason rather than using fearfulness or rashness to decide when to fight, when to endure, and when to retreat is called fortitude. Using reason rather than passion is called prudence. Using reason rather than appetite is called temperance. Using reason rather than self-interest or expediency is called justice.

Intemperance in sexual matters is unchastity. Merely because the romantic desire is strong does not give it license to overrule the reason.

6. The Rights of Man are sacred, including the rights to life, liberty, property.

  • The right to life means all men are equal in rank at birth: a peasant and an aristocrat have the same right to life: they are equal.
  • The right to liberty means no man is required to support an able-bodied man. Slavery and the welfare state are equally abhorrent.
  • The right to property means the government must back currency with gold, and have no central bank.

From the equality of man, we deduce that no man can be trusted with unbridled power over another: pragmatically, this means creating and upholding laws and customs that promote morality; legally, it means upholding objective law, constitutional and limited government, separation of powers, federalism, and limiting the franchise to landowners, clergy, professionals and tradesmen taking no money from taxpayers. It means an armed citizenry jealous of its rights and suspicious of central government.

The government is a necessary evil meant to promote morality and defend these sacred rights.

Defense against internal corruption means having a strong moral fiber; defense against crime means a strong police force to uphold the common law, it means public trials by jury, and no double jeopardy and no self incrimination; defense against foreign powers means having a strong military freed from political fashion-statements.

7. All sacred things come from God.

Trump the Nominee

Posted May 27, 2016 By John C Wright

The Associated Press carries the news:

It’s official – Trump reaches the magic number of Republican delegates to clinch nomination. Donald Trump now has 1,238 delegates in the latest Associated Press tally of primary results and the intentions of the other party delegates. Trump was put over the top in the Associated Press delegate count by a small number of the party’s unbound delegates who told the AP they would support him at the convention.

It is possible that the unbound delegates would change their votes beforehand, but, if not, this means the two jokers who heckled me for saying Mr. Trump had the majority, when he only had a plurality, provided one counted votes not yet cast, can shut their pie-eating holes now. Barring a freaking change of fortunes, there will not be a brokered convention.

I am not a Trump fan, but I am a fan of his fans. I trust the common sense of the common man, and the common man is sick of being lied to, and about.

Here is a video that made me chuckle.

An Essay on the Decline of Science Fiction

Posted May 26, 2016 By John C Wright

A reader opined that the motives of the SJWs were the quite understandable indignation at the injustice of judging someone on the basis of qualities, like race, which he could not change.

I was at a loss, because I did not have ready to hand a list of quotes and excerpts to show that this is precisely the opposite of what SJWs believe.

Fortunately, one James May, and man with a stomach more iron than mine, has waded through the mental cesspits of these freakish malcontents, and collected choice tidbits.

Captain America now a Nazi

Posted May 26, 2016 By John C Wright

So the beloved and iconic comic book character, invented by two Jews during World War Two as a promise that even a 4-f could serve his nation and fight the inhuman horror of Hitler, is now being turned by those Leftwing politically correct posthumans who have inherited the intellectual property into a Hydra Agent, that is, a Nazi.

https://douglasernstblog.com/2016/05/25/captain-america-1-nick-spencer-turns-hero-into-hydra-agent-with-tom-brevoorts-blessing/

This is an abomination. The police would investigate me if I dared to voice in public the rather unchristian daydream provoked in me of what outraged fans should do to this writer, or the cruel torments involving naked mole rats, an oil barrel, a bucket of piranhafish, a radioactive hacksaw, a gunpowder-filled plastic banana and Niagara falls. Instead I will restraint myself, and say only that this is a deadly insult against a beloved iconic character, against Jack Kirby and Stan Lee, against the loyal lifelong fans, against America itself. In a more civilized time, the gentleman would answer for his insolence with pistols at dawn.

Superluminary Episode 02 World of Death

Posted May 25, 2016 By John C Wright

For those of you who missed it, Superluminary, Episode 01, ASSASSIN IN EVEREST, is posted on Patreon:

Episode 01 Assassin in Everest

In which Aeneas Tell, the youngest member of the Imperial family of mad scientists who rule the solar system with an iron fist, is decapitated by a high-tech vampire.

Superluminary, Episode 02, WORLD OF DEATH is posted on Patreon:

Episode 02 World of Death

In this exciting episode, Aeneas Tell is flung in his pajamas onto the surface of planet Pluto.

************

As best I can see, the Patreon posts are not meant to hold the actual text being offered by writers to readers. The formatting is a mare’s nest to correct, and there seems to be no way to arrange the episodes to be read in the proper order.

I may need to post the serial episodes elsewhere, and merely use Patreon as the link terminal.

Reviewer Praise for Transhuman and Subhuman

Posted May 24, 2016 By John C Wright

Mr. Chris Chan has kind words for my book of essays:

http://catholicbookreviewsmonthly.com/archivedReviews.aspx, December
2015. The review can be downloaded, but not read online.

Transhuman and Subhuman is a collection of sixteen essays, most of which address science fiction themes, with special stress on spiritual and theological matters.

The famous science-fiction Arthur C. Clarke’s book Childhood’s End features a scene where aliens show humanity a series of “revelatory” images on a television screen, and the supposed truths of these images convince humanity to give up on religion completely.  In “Childhood’s End and Gnosticism,” Wright pours scorn upon the puerility of this scenario, noting that it the situation that Clarke describes would be hardly enough to destroy the faiths of a planet.  He writes:

“It is with a sensation of unutterable disbelief that I read a passage saying one or two days of looking at a picture on a screen provided by the “magic” produced by creatures who look like devils, (whose mission, remember, is to facilitate the extinction of mankind), would be believed without reservation or complaint by everyone from Moscow to Bombay to Lhasa to Rome to Mecca. In the world I live in, people are stubborn and cantankerous. Some have faith that will not be swayed and some of us are nuts.”

In order to believe that faith is so fragile and easily destroyed, one must have a very poor understanding of how many people come to embrace religion.  Throughout these essays, Wright attacks the view apparently held by many science fiction writers that people of faith are sheeplike buffoons, or that faith itself is inherently a form of mental weakness.

Mr. Chan discusses one or two other essays (my favorites, by no coincidence) and concludes with high praise indeed.

Wright is one of the sharpest and most interesting cultural commentators working today, but he does more than just comment on other people’s work– he creates work of his own, reflecting his ideals of what constitutes good writing through fiction, and addressing issues of society and religion through his non-fiction essays. People might not expect to gain a better understanding of religion through science fiction, but Wright shows how God is always present, even in the writings of people who deny that He exists.

If, as I have cause to doubt, my humble self is one of the sharpest and most interesting commentators working today, all I can say is that you other sharp men should perhaps dabble in cultural commentary, and let your silent voices be heard; and likewise you other cultural commentators who are dull and uninteresting should muzzle yours alleged eloquence for a decade, or until you realize how shallow and foolish your columns are.

I direct this comment particularly at gargling nitwits working at the Guardian newspaper, or Buzzfeed, who seem peculiarly wedded to clamor, falsehood and unsobriety as a way of life. If I shine, it is only in contrast to the dullness of the drab. Compared to them, anyone would seen sharp. These fellows reach levels of absurd and turgid thought I can only describe as nongenderbinaryexpeallidocious.

Humble Gratitude

Posted May 23, 2016 By John C Wright

I posted the first episode of my ongoing pulp space opera serial, SUPERLUMINARY on Patreon, and went, cap in hand, asking my kind readers to support the effort.

That was Wednesday. The promised donations have now exceeded $300 dollars a month. That amount astounds me.

I am confident nothing in my meager talents and powers are worthy of such a show of faith on behalf of my noble and generous patrons: I assume there is something in my writing which a divine muse subtly introduces into my tales, which is good, true and refreshing, in other to prove to the thunderstruck gentiles that no writer is good without the help of Heaven.

It is similar to the blessing bestowed on David the shepherd boy to allow him to slay the giant. No thunderstruck gentile, even the most foolish, would look at such an event and say, “My! That boy has a good arm!” or say “What a peculiar military coincidence!”

Likewise here: the gentiles will be sent quaking to their idols to cling at the numb stone legs of those monuments, and whisper: “The God of Abraham is God. Nothing else explains or can explain the popularity of that horrible Space Princess guy.”

Glory to God in the Highest and thanks to my patrons, friends, and supporters here on earth and elsewhere. I am astonished and humbled.

Brings the Lightning by Peter Grant

Posted May 23, 2016 By John C Wright

Peter Grant, for those of you unfortunate enough not to have heard of him, is a soldier, humanitarian, pastor and author living in Texas. He has written a new book which I would like you to consider.

He has written nonfiction on his time as a prison pastor as well as science fiction yarns The Maxwell Saga and The Laredo Trilogy, but now he has written a western.

Castalia House is very pleased to announce the publication of Book 1 in The Ames Archives, Brings the Lightning, by Peter Grant.

Backfire

Posted May 22, 2016 By John C Wright

The New York Times ran a front page story about Donald Trump’s behavior toward women, and discovered that, decades ago, he gave a compliment to an attractive girl whom he invited to a pool party.

When her saw her in a bikini, he said “Wow!”

The press ran the story saying it showed disrespect toward Rowanne Brewer Lane, the young lady in question: Miss Lane, as it happens, told Fox News the next day that she was enraged by the newspaper’s account. The interviewer had lied to her, and misrepresented her words. She felt neither degraded nor offended, and describes the Donald as kind, generous and thoughtful, “a gentleman,” and she intends to vote for him.

(ADDENDUM added 5/24: I was behind the times even in the hour when I wrote the above paragraph. By the time of this writing, three, not one, three of the women interviewed revile the New York Times coverage of their remarks as being deceptive, misleading, slanted, or baldfaced lies. Three of them. End of Addendum.)

The Left has so entirely deceived themselves about the nature of sex, masculinity and femininity with so much fervor and so little regard for reality for so long, that they now regard the idea that a rich playboy likes the company of beautiful women is nearly incomprehensible to them.

For a point of reference, below is what Miss Lane looked like in a bathing suit.

Aux Armes, Citoyens

Posted May 21, 2016 By John C Wright

http://dailycaller.com/2016/05/19/security-guard-arrested-for-removing-man-from-womens-bathroom/

A female security guard working at a Washington, D.C. grocery store was arrested Monday afternoon for physically escorting a man out of the women’s restroom after he refused to leave because he identifies as a woman.

The shopper — a young, African-American male who identified himself as Ebony Belcher to local news outlets — reportedly passed the security guard on his way into the women’s restroom at a Giant grocery store in Northeast D.C.

After seeing Belcher walk into the women’s restroom, the security guard followed him in and ordered the man to leave. When he refused, the security guard had to physically escort him out of the women’s restroom.

Upon leaving the store, Belcher called police to have the security guard arrested. D.C. police confirmed to NBC4 Washington that the woman was arrested and charged with simple assault. D.C. police told TheDC that they are treating the incident as a “suspected hate crime.”

He told WJLA that he believed “the woman had no reason to put her hands on me,” adding that he was emotionally traumatized by the incident. “I’m hurt by this. It’s terrible… I’m distraught,” he said. “People should not be discriminated [sic] based on their gender identity.”

My comment: The social contract is officially broken when those entrusted with protecting the body politic from criminals who would invade their natural rights have sided with the criminals and declared for the invasion, and when discussion on the matter is no longer possible, instead called hate speech.

Anarchy is a condition of lawlessness; tyranny is when the enforcers of the law are lawless.

The courts, police, and administrators are lawless when they enforce laws that have not been passed, or enforce laws so vague that they cannot serve to tell a reasonable man what is or is not prohibited and allowed.
