Learning to Love Big Brother

Posted January 31, 2019 By John C Wright

From the American Conservative:

I keep talking about how in the West, we are swiftly moving into a culture that resembles communist totalitarianism — this, based on what people who grew up under communism tell me. It’s not about gulags or secret police; it’s about building a post-liberal culture defined by militant progressive ideology, and enforcing it by destroying, personally and professionally, those who dissent. Part of this is inculcating fear and self-loathing within the minds of people living in those cultures. You don’t need the secret police when you have taught people to police themselves according to your totalitarian principles.

Today the New Totalitarianism took a new scalp, in a way that ought to scare the hell out of all of us, on both the left and the right, who value free speech and inquiry. And it happened to someone born in a communist country.

CombatFrameXSeed — New novel from Brian Niemeier

Posted January 30, 2019 By John C Wright

The future is over.

Civilization on Earth has collapsed. Oligarchs have established a new order in manmade space colonies at the Earth-Moon LaGrange points.

A group of powerful colonies form the Systems Overterrestrial Coalition to re-civilize the earth, but grounders view the colonists as hostile meddlers. The Coalition counters the rising violence with giant manned robots called combat frames.

The independent L3 colonies denounce the war on Earth. In response, Coalition Security Director Sanzen takes L3 leader Josef Friedlander’s wife and daughter hostage. Amid the tense standoff, Friedlander’s son Sieg launches an unsanctioned rescue mission to L1’s Byzantium colony.

Infanticide Bill

Posted January 30, 2019 By John C Wright

If any of my readers are Virginians, rush to your pens or your phones and write or call your state delegate or state senator.

The inhuman and inhumane law, just passed in New York State amid wild and demonic celebration, which would allow abortions on demand up until birth, and which, should the baby be accidentally be born alive, deny the child medical care so that he die of wounds or exposure, has been introduced into the Virginia House of Delegates.

This ghastly measure was introduced by a Delegate named Kathy Tran and bears the innocuous name of ‘the Repeal Act.’

If you do not know who your local representatives are, here is a handy website:

Lost on the Last Continent, Episode 69, First Mate’s Mate

Posted January 30, 2019 By John C Wright

Lost on the Last Continent, Episode 69, First Mate’s Mate, is now posted.

Episode 69 First Mate’s Mate

In this episode, Colonel Lost, on the eve of war, gets caught up in quarrels and fisticuffs, a new enemy and a new quest.

*** *** ***

Note from the Author:

Sorry for the long delay, Fans of Pangaea, but things I thought would take weeks took months. I had three cars die on me, one after another, the last one due to odometer fraud, so had to visit mechanics and used car salesmen and (in one case) the legal consultants. In that same period, I vacationed with family, changed dayjobs once, plus ran a successful funding campaign for STARQUEST, which I am also working on diligently.

However, this series will not go on forever, even though, had I the stamina of Edgar Rice Burroughs, it would. Roughly ten more episodes are left. We are counting down to the dramatic climax and crescendo.

I do not know how many people, if any, are still reading this, but as long as there is still one fan who wants to find out the fate of the Last Continent, I will persevere.

From the pen of Andrew Klavan

Posted January 30, 2019 By John C Wright

KLAVAN: You Can’t Read the Bible Here! This is America! [Satire]

Several states are considering laws mandating public school classes in Bible literacy, though leftists say this violates the constitutional separation of the church and the state of godless immorality.

President of the ACLU Les Wright, in a speech to a golden statue of a goat, said, “As head of the American Civil Liberties Union, I strongly oppose America, civility, liberties and union. If the Bible is taught in schools, I fear it might poison the minds of innocent children with the idea that they are endowed by God with individual rights. And that’s not who we are.”

Wendy Rage, the president of Atheists Seeking to Stamp out Holy Authority and Teaching (ASSHAT) issued a statement saying, “What has the Bible given to America? Absolutely nothing. It’s a fly in the ointment when the powers that be want to cast the first stone that will lead to a fall from grace as when the blind are leading the blind. If we can’t see eye to eye on this, I’m at my wit’s end and wash my hands of the matter with a broken heart. Instead of having words put in our mouths, can’t we rise and shine and eat, drink and be merry until we bite the dust? Or is it a sign of the times that the writing’s on the wall and in the twinkling of an eye we’ll leave the strait and narrow and die by the sword.”

When told that every phrase in her statement actually came from the Bible, as did most of her ideas and values, Miss Rage said, “Gee, I didn’t know that! They should have taught us the Bible in school!”

Alexandria Occasional Cortex, Democrat Congresswoman from the State of Utter Ignorance, also opposed Bible Literacy, saying, “I don’t have to know the Bible to say what morality is any more than I have to know anything to say anything.”

God Himself also issued a statement. It’s called the Bible.

My Comment: I have read satires funnier, but not one wittier, than the recitation of Biblical phrases and quotes put in the mouth of the make believe critic of Biblical learning.

Adults, and Conservatives, honor the traditions of the past to preserve and pass on its hard won heritage to our posterity. Children, and Leftists, live in the eternal present.

On Man Skills

Posted January 29, 2019 By John C Wright

Mr. A. Doofus:

The skills men aspire to are the Man Skills, an ability to solve real-world problems, often involving physical strength or technical know-how, rather than creativity or emotional intelligence.

Mr. Larry Correia:

It isn’t an either or, doofus. Physical strength and creativity are not mutually exclusive. One of my best friends is an award winning poet who did strong man competitions. He can bend heavy duty nails with his bare hands and then write a haiku about it.

During the Culture War, it is often instructive, and greatly amusing, at least for those of us prone to schadenfreude (delight at the woe of another — a word for a concept so cruel, that it exists only in the German language), to behold one of our most doughty champions of manhood, truth, virtue and awesome to wield a spiked bludgeon of rhetoric with the artistic grace of a conductor’s baton or the precision of a fencer’s epee in order, metaphorically speaking, to break bones, splatter blood, collapse lungs, crush testicles, and crumple the utterly empty balloon-skull of some soymilk-sipping effete yet arrogant craven-souled waspish limp-wristed blithermouth lecturing men that the right side of history excludes them.

A Reminder

Posted January 27, 2019 By John C Wright

Apparently these are some here who do not understand or do not respect the normal rules of human courtesy. I enforce the following.

The comments containing any one of the following are subject to summary editing or deletion without further comment or explanation, and the user subject to ban:

  • Politically correct ‘corrections’ of normal English;
  • Swear words or vulgarity;
  • Anti-Semitic, racist, racial separatist or  racial supremacist remarks;
  • Personal attacks, ad hominem, or strawman arguments offered in lieu of argument when combined with a repeated unwillingness or inability to answer questions or to acknowledge counterarguments;
  • Accusing another of being ‘unchristian’ for disagreement on political, philosophical, or abstract matters.

This last is particularly egregious, as it uses the Name of the Lord in vain. Such accusations will be deleted and accusers banned without further notification.

Comments containing oversized or vulgar images are subject to deletion without notice.

Generalization, Prejudice, Bigotry

Posted January 26, 2019 By John C Wright

To forestall many weary semantic arguments, I urge one and all to adopt a certain clarity of thought on the topic of prejudice and race prejudice.

Each man was to be judged on his merit. Anything else is devilry.

Some Are More Equal Than Others

Posted January 25, 2019 By John C Wright

A perennial topic, which will never die until the Left dies, is the misunderstanding, usually a deliberate misunderstanding, of the meaning of the concept of equality in the eyes of the law.

This is precisely the sloppy thinking that is the core of everything wrong in the modern world. I will say this yet again. I never tire of saying it:

The word “equality” is a legal term.

It means that the same laws are enforced on all men in society, regardless of birth. It means two men are the same rank.

The Keepers of New Haven — Kickstarter!

Posted January 24, 2019 By John C Wright

Jagi, here. Posting this for one of my authors. (Though this is not the series of hers I edit.)

Kickstarter from Silver Empire for a new series written by our own Bokerah Brumley

Vengeance always has consequences.

Woe is a fallen angel, sentenced to mortality for an unforgivable violation of angelic code. Cast down to the streets of New Haven, she is rescued by Fae prince Arún, who delivers her into the care of Jason, a local balance keeper.

As the dark and brooding Jason coaches Woe on the intricacies of being human, she discovers a rush of new and exhilarating feelings that are difficult to ignore, compounded by the always timely arrival of her Fae hero-savior.

Jason comes face-to-face with his humanity, torn between his desire for Woe and his vows to keep New Haven safe.

Arún finds himself drawn to Woe and to the destiny he does not want, further testing his loyalty to the kingdom of his birth.

As an unseen enemy circles ever closer, Woe is forced to choose between them, and the fate of worlds hangs in the balance.

Join the Keepers of New Haven as they fight to maintain the balance between good and evil in a paranormal world where nothing is as it seems.

Cannibalism, Torture, and Tyranny

Posted January 23, 2019 By John C Wright

I have challenged a Mr Jones to answer which of his objections against Christianity were rational rather than merely emotional sentiment. He has, despite my initial misgivings, answered honestly, like a man, but now fears we have reached an impasse, because now we have identified certain fundamental axioms where we do not agree.

I offer now to start a new conversation about those axioms. Let us examine the first: God exists.

Of necessity, axioms cannot be proved true or false by logic. In most cases, axioms are thought true because those conclusions (if any) that cannot be true unless the axiom is also true are conclusions not in dispute.
