Christmastide

Posted December 25, 2019 By John C Wright

Some say that ever ‘gainst that season comes
Wherein our Saviour’s birth is celebrated,
The bird of dawning singeth all night long:
And then, they say, no spirit dare stir abroad;
The nights are wholesome; then no planets strike,
No fairy takes, no witch has power to charm,
So hallow’d and gracious is the time. –Hamlet

In keeping with the tradition here at John C. Wright’s Journal, I reprint, as I do each year, this list the feasts of the Twelve Days of Christmas, and to urge my fellow traditionalists to continue the Christly and Christian work of Keeping the Feast and Partyin’ On! Let us pause for unsolemn reflection on these solemnities.

A Message for Disney

Posted December 24, 2019 By John C Wright

I have not seen WRONG OF SKYWALKER and have no plans to see it. However, an angry drunk Scotsman puts into words my sentiments so clearly and adroitly, that I can do no more than quote him.

While the whole review is insightful and truthful, if a trifle foul mouthed for my taste, I recommend listening to his end message to Disney, which starts at about 27 minutes in.

Wherefore by their Fruits, Episode 10 The Standgale

Posted December 23, 2019 By John C Wright

Wherefore by their Fruits, Episode 10 The Standgale, is now posted.

Episode 10: The Standgale

In which Princox fishes a brisket-beater from the wet, and discovers him alive.

From the look of his beads, the cull is a red-letter man, straight from the hum box of an autem kirk. I thought such goose-cap knee-bending foolery was long ago outlawed?

We pray that you, too, will have a truly wonderful Christmas of your own.

God bless you all!

Not Tired of Winning XCII

Posted December 20, 2019 By John C Wright

I am counting this as a win, even though, in truth, it merely averting a loss. The 1.4 billion set aside for funding the border wall passed through with the latest Congressional spending bill, far short of the 8 billion the administration requested. So construction on the wall will continue, as before, but slowly, as before.

World Getting Worse or Not

Posted December 19, 2019 By John C Wright

Some statistics from a talk by Stephen Pinker. The original video can be found here.

Last year (2017), Americans killed each other at a rate of 5.3 per hundred thousand, had 7 percent of their citizens in poverty and emitted 21 million tons of particulate matter and 4 million tons of sulfur dioxide.

But 30 years ago (1987), the homicide rate was 8.5 per hundred thousand, poverty rate was 12 percent and we emitted 35 million tons of particulate matter and 20 million tons of sulfur dioxide.

Last year, the world had 12 ongoing wars, 60 autocracies, 10 percent of the world population in extreme poverty and more than 10,000 nuclear weapons.

But 30 years ago, there were 23 wars, 85 autocracies, 37 percent of the world population in extreme poverty and more than 60,000 nuclear weapons.

Ember Days

Posted December 18, 2019 By John C Wright

A reminder to my Catholic brethren:

Today, Friday, and Saturday are all Ember days. This means on Wednesday and Saturday, we observe partial fast and abstinence – two small meatless meals, and one full meal that can include meat.

On Friday, we may take two small meals and one full meal, but observe total abstinence even at the main meal. This is identical to the currently observed fasts of Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

Also worth noting: Christmas Eve is traditionally a day of fast and total abstinence as well.

The ever informative Fisheaters website has more to say:

This is THE LAST STRAW!

Posted December 16, 2019 By John C Wright

Here it is, folks:

Once, in a theater long ago and far, far away, young audiences thrilled to the nostalgic space epic of yesteryear, known then only as STAR WARS, and were duly enthralled. So much goodwill, so much affection, so much love has rarely been lavished on any franchise. So much money from so many eager fans was never so readily available.

And yet, with one potent Deathstar-like blast of mind-breakingly awful film making, the Disney Corporation has managed to alienate that goodwill, spurn that affection, and lose that money.

Why? What makes THE LAST JEDI so appallingly bad?

What made the film maker think he could win over his audience by insulting his audience?

John C. Wright’s epic takedown of Disney’s The Last Jedi, a Critical Autopsy of a Galaxy Far Far Away.

PS. If you were a backer for the Starquest campaign, a copy of the ebook is included in your Perks.

Not Tired of Winning XCI

Posted December 16, 2019 By John C Wright

The President keeps another promise. If our nation holds the “high ground” of outer space, overt military action by any foreign foe an insurmountable disadvantage for decades to come.

U.S. House of Representatives approved a $738 billion defense policy bill providing for the creation of a Space Force on Wednesday, Dec 11.

Sic Semper Hoplophobia

Posted December 16, 2019 By John C Wright

Dear Leftwing, You have awakened the sleeping giant.

From Gun Rights Watch:

… Virginia is undergoing wholesale rebellion by rural and even suburban counties, rejecting the oppressive gun control agenda recently revealed by the new incoming Democrat-controlled legislature. …

The county-level defensive tactic that began originally in Oregon close to a decade ago, then popularized in Illinois, has spread to over a dozen states. … [M]any communities in the state are vowing not to take part in any gun confiscation schemes or enforcement of unconstitutional laws designed to make private citizens less able to defend themselves.

The speed at which they reacted is a testament to how furious they are that their state government now wishes to infringe on their rights. An even dozen counties have passed gun owner sanctuary resolutions already, with new ones coming on a near-daily basis.

Reviewer Praise for BARSOOM TO MALACANDRA

Posted December 16, 2019 By John C Wright

My nonfiction essay collection, From Barsoom to Malacandra, has garnered its first reader review, which is a five star. (This is not a review written by my mother, because she does not read my books.)

John C. Wright is a master of science fiction. No one can tell a fantasy or space opera as well. This series of musings on what makes good or great work is insightful, unique and interesting. His essay on the new star wars is worth the price of the book all by itself. All fans of the genre should read this book.

I am humbled by this high praise, and hope all my readers will take it to heart.

A word of warning: all this material, in one form or another, was previously published here on my blog, and hence is no longer available.  Longtime readers may have read the essays before.  On the other hand, if you want a permanent copy in case of an anti-Conservative purge on WordPress, act now.
