Tolkien and Diversity

Posted June 12, 2021 By John C Wright

This is not a joke. I swear by all that is holy that I am not making this up. I lack the imagination.

Theme

While interest in the topic of diversity has steadily grown within Tolkien research, it is now receiving more critical attention than ever before.

Heroes of Iwo Jima

Posted June 11, 2021 By John C Wright

I used to work right across the street from the Newseum on Pennsylvania Avenue, and so was only three miles from the Iwo Jima Memorial in Rosslyn. I took a bag lunch and ate there once or twice.

Here is a story that was sent to me, and I am sending it along. Heartwarming and sobering at the same time.

The author below does not give his own name, but it is Michael T Powers. The words below were transcribed from an October, A.D. 2000 videotape he made of a talk given by author James Bradley at the Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington, Virginia. Bradley, whose father, John, was one of the six men pictured in the famous photograph of the flag-raising on Mt. Suribachi in February 1945 (and is thus depicted in the monument’s sculpture), had earlier that year published Flags of Our Fathers, an account of the life stories of those six men.

On Race Pride

Posted June 11, 2021 By John C Wright

I have been told the word “racist” is itself a type of propaganda word, because it conflates two distinct ideas, namely, racial patriotism — being a European wanting to live among Europeans, or being and English-speaker and wanting to live among of Anglos — and racial hatred, particularly Jew-hatred, which is an ongoing mental disease afflicting all of history. The Devil hates the Chosen People, and his children adopt his works and ways.

I see nothing wrong with the racial patriotism or racial pride. If Black Pride is fine, so is White Pride.

We — and here I mean, my family, the Wrights — invented the airplane.

My race — and here I mean the Pennsylvania Dutch, whom I regard as the master race — invented the moonrocket, after all.

Give Me Ninety-Nine, or, Another Mom Speaks Out

Posted June 10, 2021 By John C Wright

Likens the current Critical Race Theory training to the Cultural Revolution of China. It is not as if the Left, or the Devil, ever changes strategy.

Prayer Request

Posted June 10, 2021 By John C Wright

Time for a Prayer:
Father, we ask you to Thwart the plans of those who wish to destroy our Republic.
Deliver us from Marxism.
Preserve our Republic.
O God of Justice and Judgment, bring back President Trump to his rightful place.
Restore what the locust has eaten.
Be exalted, in Jesus name, Amen.

Give Me One Hundred Like Her

Posted June 10, 2021 By John C Wright

… and we can save the nation, and the West, and the world, from the bubbling tar pits of insanity now dragging us ever downward.

By thunder, give me even ten such souls.

Note that this tale first appeared in Dark Discoveries: Issue 31, ed. James R. Beach (Spring, 2015)

It is reprinted in ALL MEN DREAM OF EARTHWOMEN AND OTHER AEONS, and made available here in preview, as a courtesy to my readers.

Scepter of Nowhere, part 1: It Happened So Quickly, is now posted.

It happened so quickly. We used to be human beings, you see. When I heard the bomb go off, I ran to the door at the end of the corridor.

Is Conservativism Radicalism Grown Old?

Posted June 7, 2021 By John C Wright

Scenes from the Twilight Zone episode ‘An Obsolete Man’ – posted in this space earlier — particularly those where the dystopian tyrants declare that books are obsolete and that the State has proved God does not exist — do seem notoriously conservative.

It strikes the modern ear as odd, considering that Rod Serling himself was the epitome of what was considered liberal or leftwing in postwar America.

It is commonly observed that the radicals of yore are the conservatives of today. After all, any idea, including political ideas, now revered as traditional was, at one time, new.

But this observation is an illusion, a trick of eyes.

To divide the world into conservative and radical merely divides the worldviews into old and new. This is bosh. The real division is the subjective versus objective, the expedient versus the principled, the temporary versus the eternal.

A Pinch of Incense Burned to Caesar

Posted June 5, 2021 By John C Wright

When I was an atheist, I was logical, and wanted to be. I thought I worshipped nothing. In one sense, I did worship nothing, and I felt no gratitude. In another sense, I worshiped logic as if it were a god.

As a Christian, it is much more fun. The heavy burden of pride can be thrown aside, and gratitude, thanksgiving, the joy of saying “thank you!” and meaning it, take its place. This is the joy Satan can never know.

Those who worship Caesar, the state, are worshipping themselves writ large: an idol of Man, glorious Man, who is actually the Beast from the Apocalypse, and a destroyer.

Those who worship Caesar are always sad, always angry, always petulant, because they are entitled to — everything. And when you get that to which you are entitled, it is your due, nothing more, and so gratitude, beautiful gratitude, escapes your fingers, and there is no joy.

Pity is what these poor souls deserve. Pity and sorrow.

Gatekeepers

Posted June 4, 2021 By John C Wright

It is with a sense of sorrow that I regard the burning rubbish heap of what were once the most successful and beloved franchises, across multiple genres, in history. Not one has been spared.

Freeborn John

Posted June 2, 2021 By John C Wright

An question asked by a troll or wag as a jest or jib can nonetheless contain an interesting question. We have all been asked and been asking what concrete steps can be taken against the Powers That Be to restore liberty to America, and America to Christendom.

Rather than outline a plan to follow, allow me to suggest an example to follow.

This is the story of Freeborn John Lilburne, without whose effort, we would neither enjoy the protection of the rights listed in the Fifth nor the Sixth Amendments.

Puzzled and fretting about what to do next? Do what he did.

This material is taken from Spartacus Educational.

Choosers of the Slain, Event Relic 3, The Land of the Young, is now posted.

Choosers of the Slain

As with all event relics gathered into the Great Museum of Man by the Time Wardens after the final extinction of mankind, this is only the current redaction.

What later chronomancers will add or alter, is, of course, a matter of speculation, based on those contemporary records of future events which our posterity allows to stand.

What makes this relic unusual is its stability. The Curator has yet no record of any variant timeline in which Prince-Chancellor Penthane displays a different character.

Some may be tempted to adduce from such illusions of stability that there are qualities of the human spirit which remain the same across all variations of time, which form a limit to the power of the Museum to edit history: but such speculation offends the dignity of the Time Wardens, and must be avoided, lest we be redacted ourselves by our own future.
