In Praise of Beale

Posted February 15, 2017 By John C Wright

Someone asked me privately why I say that Vox Day is the best editor under whom it has been my privilege to work. I wrote a private answer, but I see no reason not to share it with the world. Mr. Day does not suffer from false modesty.

I do not mind elaborating.

The question is broader than just one author’s opinion about one editor. It is asking what editing is. That is a deeper question, too deep for this column, but I can plant a few signs pointing the direction where a fuller answer hides.

Ctrl+Left

Posted February 13, 2017 By John C Wright

In case any of my honest readers wonder why my tone is strident and militant of late, and why I speak of drawing the sword against the Ctrl+Left, allow me to proffer three points to explain my conclusion.

The Last Crusade 06 (Guest): The Kid Gloves are Going On

Posted February 12, 2017 By John C Wright

The following is a guest column  on the nature of honor and violence and its place in the Last Crusade. It is by C. J. P. Comstock:

Honor has been the butt of many jokes and of much unpleasant deconstructionism, a mere cosmetic application they say, for usual porcine behavior. Any modern academic of orthodox type, upon being triggered by awareness of the existence of the concept, would no doubt pronounce it nearly as great an instrument of injustice as ‘religion,’ by which he would mean Christianity.

It is, perhaps, correct that the current fad of political correctness, if allowed to run to its final and bitter end, would end conflict by programming all to believe that the best way to escape the agony of self-triggering awareness of the innumerable hurts nature, or the self-esteem of invertebrates, endure due to their privileged existence – is to embrace euthanasia as soon as possible: peace through extinction.

However, there would inevitably be a few who refused to sacrifice themselves for the betterment of self-righteousness, or certain of the programmers and conditioners would retain some for labor and recreational use, and so the planet still would not be left in sterile peace, and therefore we must look elsewhere for a mechanism to prevent injustice.

Signal Boost for John Del Arroz

Posted February 11, 2017 By John C Wright
Jon Del Arroz is a Christian conservative author who has recently come under fire from the hard-left big publishing establishment in science fiction.
You can read the gory details here, but basically what happened is his neurotic publisher fired him for wearing a Trump MAGA hat in the privacy of his own home. He was blackballed from Baycon, and all this fair-weather friends and faithless fellows turned on him.
The Thought Police Left is trying to destroy his career. He is the designated Pinata for the berserk mob. Do not think it cannot happen to you. And by all means open your wallet and let some dead presidents speak against this outrage for you.
His debut novel is a space opera tie-in for the Star Realms: Deckbuilding Game, and has been hailed by left and right wing authors alike, appearing on both Mary Robinette Kowal and Vox Day’s blogs.
The book, Star Realms: Rescue Run can be found here: http://bit.ly/starrealmsnovel

Evidence for the Self Evident

Posted February 10, 2017 By John C Wright

This is a column which is both overdue, and unnecessary.

It is unnecessary because any honest man of average intelligence can deduce the truth of the matter after a moment’s reflection, and those above average in less time.

It is overdue because for years, decades, and well-nigh a century now, sophists have been pretending not to understand the matter, or been deceived by such sophistry.

The matter of which I speak is whether or not we hold the truth to be self-evident that all men are created equal.

This phrase comes from the opening of the Declaration of Independence, penned by Thomas Jefferson, and gives in a few brief, clear, and stirring words, the entire political philosophy justifying a rebellion to replace monarchy with a republican form of government as best suited to defend the natural rights of man from trespass.

For many a year, all on the Left have openly or tacitly scorned this sacred principle of equality.

Lawless Law

Posted February 10, 2017 By John C Wright

I hope the kind reader is familiar enough with current events to grasp the significance here.

Title 8 United States Code, section 1182(f), of the Immigration and Nationality Act, is entitled “Suspension of Entry or Imposition of Restrictions by President” and states:

Whenever the President finds that the entry of any aliens or of any class of aliens into the United States would be detrimental to the interests of the United States, he may by proclamation, and for such period as he shall deem necessary, suspend the entry of all aliens or any class of aliens as immigrants or nonimmigrants, or impose on the entry of aliens any restrictions he may deem to be appropriate.

On January 27, 2017, President Trump issued Executive Order No. 13769, entitled “Protecting the Nation From Foreign Terrorist Entry Into the United States.”  The executive order expressly cited 8 USC, sec. 1182(f) and quoted its language.

As a better man than I has said, even a bad high school student could read and understand the meaning of these words, and the holding of this law.

The Trump Happiness Montage

Posted February 10, 2017 By John C Wright

It has been a fortnight or so since Donald Trump was inaugurated. Not even a month. Not yet a quarter of his first hundred days.In that time, more has been done to restore and reform the United States back into the nation we recall from our youth than any GOP politician in two lifetimes, most of all by caning back the press.

For example, the 1996 ‘Congressional Review Act’ will permit the GOP controlled Senate to eliminate the any regulation invented during last sixty workdays of Obama regulatory overreach with a simple majority, filibuster-proof. The Act provides that no bureaucrat can revisit or re-enact a regulation so struck down.

Now, the sixty day clock starts running whenever the regulation is promulgated or when it is reported to the Congress, WHICHEVER IS LATER.

These reports were neglected to be sent by the Obama administration, and, indeed, many earlier administrations, hence if Trump orders the report written for regulations that have never been reported previously, the clock starts running again, Congress gets a veto over the regulation as of that date, even if the regulation has been around for decades.

I wake each day eager, rather than dreading, to see the news.

And we have not yet picked up speed as yet. Obamacare is going. The Wall is coming. Heed no naysayers. The croaking crows will croak away.

On Identity Politics

Posted February 9, 2017 By John C Wright

Some say that the success of identity politics trumped up by the Left proves that a man will always side with his inborn tribal group, grievance group, and identity politics group rather than with any political doctrine or party or nation into which education, experience, or personal decision might lead him.

Nations are never built on a proposition that all men are created equal and never have been: they are only build on tribes and clans. So runs the theory.

Those who believe this say that the way to defeat Leftwing Anti-White identity politics is by adopting Pro-White identity politics.

They are seduced into making a simple error. It is an error so simple that even a highly intelligent partisan of that movement might not see it.

The identity-grievance politics groups on the Left are all about Leftism and nothing about identity.

President Caucasian v President Crusader

Posted February 9, 2017 By John C Wright

A reader with the utopian name of Brooch Paradise asks:

One thing I’m curious about is what differences you have with the alt right in terms of action. So if president Alt Right were in office, what would or wouldn’t he do that’d you’d take issue with, and if president Last Crusade was in office what would or wouldn’t he do that the alt right would take issue with?

There are no difference in terms of action that I can foresee.

The only difference is in terms of how the debate is framed to the public. The Alt-Right will appeal to the loyalty men feel toward their skin color, which, as far as I can tell, outside of Leftwing Fever Swamps, is none at all. The Last Crusade will appear to the loyalty men feel toward Western Civilization, toward life and liberty and the pursuit of happiness, and toward goodness, truth, beauty, virtue and Jesus Christ.

Whose appeal do you think is broader and deeper?

Allegory and Message Fiction

Posted February 9, 2017 By John C Wright

A frustrated reader asks a trenchant question: “Do politics even have a place in a story?”

Certainly, as long as it remains a story. An allegory or extended parable is not a story properly so called, for the figures in the story have no life of their own and no meaning aside from the allegorical meaning. The figure of Christian in PILGRIM’S PROGRESS has no personal personality traits. The reader cannot tell what sort of man he is, what are his likes and dislikes, what makes him different from other Christian men, because he is not a character, merely a figure meant to represent an idea.Christian could be any Christian man.

Likewise, in STARSHIP TROOPERS, the Bugs of Klendathu do not have any personality. They merely are stock figures meant to represent an enemy, any enemy.

Why I am Not Alt Right

Posted February 8, 2017 By John C Wright

A reader with a wiser muse than mine has summed up hours of tedious argumentation with a quip, which I here repeat with relief:

  • The Alt-Right says: We must fight identity politics with identity politics.
  • I say: No, we must fight faith with faith.

I should add that I am not singling out the Alt-Right for this criticism. The mainstream Right makes the same error using different terms.

The Right apparently believe the fight with the Left is a political struggle, that is, a conflict of lobbyist groups edging for position within the context of an overall framework of laws and customs. It is not. The Left is a religious cult whose aim is to dismantle and destroy those laws and customs.

In both cases, the Cntrl-Left is bringing a gun. A Mainstream Right is bringing a polite knife and the Alt-Right is bringing a rude one, but neither of them see what the fight is really about.

More on this later.
